My rule of thumb is is if it's something super cartoon-y like in runaway railway or something like Madame Leota and the Hatbox Ghost, projections work. But if it's supposed to look even a little human like in the frozen ride or with Constance, make an actual animatronic with an actual animatronic face because otherwise it teeters on the edge of the uncanny valley in a really bad way and just looks cheap like what you would expect at a regional theme park or even Universal.

i imagine this will go away once micro led tech develops a bit more. they will be able to make a head thats any shape and have the skin be entirely micro leds, so they can pretty accurately mimic the brightness skin would actually be. with hdr and high colour accuracy. but yeah, until then it seems like this is just a lazy alternative. theres ways they could make it look far better. having the scene be lit at a brightness to make the face match and then matt out the face from those lights so you get a more even looking brightness across the whole character. but that would be more work and more maintenance.

Yes! Thank you! I’ve had a lot of issues with the recent reliance on projections and projection mapping. The updated Mara statue at the beginning of Indiana Jones looks far less threatening with the projections, largely because I would say most people have a basic understanding of how projections work, whereas high-quality animatronics and other more “practical” effects are a little harder for people to understand. They may be able to say “oh that’s an animatronic,” but there’s so much engineering involved that it’s still more impressive because you can’t replicate it at home with a store-bought projector and a mannequin. Even the current iteration of Mr. Lincoln is far more mind-blowing than the weird glowing faces mentioned in the video. There’s certainly a time and place for projection (Mickey’s Mix Magic is a stellar use of projection mapping onto Main St. and the castle) but I would hate to see this company that has done so much in the world of technology start to rely more heavily on an easy trick.

UK resident here and major disney park fan - so Paris is my “home park” - meaning I am dreadfully spoiled and privileged when it comes to our Phantom Manor/Haunted Mansion. I LOVE the eerieness that physical animatronics can add to the ghostly forms of the characters in the haunted mansion. The beating-heart bride was terrifying when i first saw her as a tiny child and was so disappointed when i learnt about constance replacing her. Whilst I can understand that projections can work for ghosts, having something physically in front of you rather than just digital can immerse you further and is even more unnerving if done correctly - because how can a ghost be real? It taps into that uncanny valley, in the best possible way. The projections, however, look flat and a lot more like someone is trying to convince you a ghost is in front of you rather than there just being one there. It really is about adding dimension, at the end of the day, and you can’t get that, especially from a range of angles, when you are projecting something onto a flat surface.

You nailed the issue. The contrast. Bad projected animatronics can stick out like a sore thumb when the rest of the ride has physical animatronics. Especially in a ride like Shanghai's Pirates of the Caribbean where there are just two random projected pirates that look awful in an otherwise amazing set piece.

Personally I hope that they used the projection faces as placeholders while they were developing the tech to make more advanced facial animatronics (like the ones we see in the beauty and the best ride.) If that's true it could mean that we'll be seeing the Projection faces replaced with the absolutely gorgeous and technologically amazing faces.

Yes!!! I absolutely agree with this. Projections used correctly in disney parks absolutely BLOW me away, but that's usually when they blend seamlessly into the environment around them, or are used for some specific effect like hatbox ghost or runaway railway! When I saw the initial videos of the animatronics for Belle, I almost cried because it was so gorgeous. Maybe it's just the theatre major in me, but projections aren't always the most beautiful thing to go with, even if they are the easiest! I hope they change this in the future with the Frozen ride, and DON'T do this with the new splash mountain!

I really wish they'd do like life-like animatronics cuz the projection animatronics like Constance and Elsa just pull me out of the experience. Especially since we /know/ Disney can make amazing life-like animatronics. Like the Jack Sparrow and Spaceship Earth animatronics have really held up to time

they were so overexcited about how many different expressions they could give buzz in space ranger spin that they made him just constantly roll his eyes, contort his lips, all sorts of weird inhuman facial movements. this leads me to believe that buzz is a pathological liar who knows he's sending us all to our deaths at the hands of zurg. really changes the ride experience for me.

For Constance, I think it would be cool to only keep the axe as a projection and everything else, especially the face, to be physical animatronic

The one thing I like about Constance is that it feels like it’s just a mannequin with the bride’s dress on it that is being possessed by the ghost of Constance. Which is why it’s more flat feeling

At least with the dwarves you go by fast enough to not really notice it after the first couple of rides (and at the time they were trying a totally new technique of projecting and achieved pretty good results so I gave them props for that. I love how expressive Sneezy is! 😆) But with Frozen Ever After, the slower pace and more extreme lighting conditions made it stand out way too much. Not to mention, these characters didn't need the squash and stretching that the dwarfs' faces specifically needed the projections for.

Projector faces have been around in the early days of disneyland, I think it is fine, and when you have glitches it is the same as a anamotronic malfunction. It us fine

Anyone else hear the audio glitch near the end of the video? It sounds like he's going to say something after the Elsa-cricket noise gag but the audio cuts out, and doesn't come back until he's thanking the viewer for watching the video, and then goes into the Magic Candle Company pitch where the audio briefly cuts out again and comes back.

I think we all do, unless he's reuploaded a fixed version? But yeah, I do. I didn't hear another Magic Candle though though but it did go oddly quiet after he starts to say something.

Excellent episode! Your footage of Constance the Bride from directly in front of her points out the issue with that figure as seen by visitors in the doombuggies--The angle of the park visitor's point of view is so much worse in person. Looked bad in the video clip you used--looks even worse in person. Bring back either of the old brides, they were much scarier!!!

Mostly I'm over the nightly castle projection shows. Fireworks are spectacular enough. I miss all the trees that had to be removed from the HUB area in front of the castle.

what's worse is we know disney can make human animatrinics with facial expressions mimicking just about everything a human's face can do. and we know they have the power to put that into fictional cartoon and creature animatronics.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw the title of this video. I think projection animatronics are fine, they serve their purpose, but the Beauty and the Beast ride in Tokyo Disneyland shows how these animatronics really should be done. On my one and only ride through of Frozen Ever After, in the scene where the boat is prepared to fall backwards, the projection on both Elsa's face and in the water had a fit. It flashed an actual blue screen, before showing the Walt Disney Imagineering logo, until finally, they just went dark. Great first impression of the (at the time) brand-new ride.

By the way, love your content Dallin. I believe I've been subscribed to your channel since around the upload of "The Dark Side of Disneyland." Growing up in Florida, my family visited Walt Disney World pretty much annually, so I thought I knew everything there was to know about the parks. Your channel blew that preconception away, and gave me a whole new way of exploring the hidden details and easter eggs in the parks. Absolutely awesome work on all of your videos, and I look forward to what you have planned in the future.

The problem is that when something is used so often it becomes very obvious what you’re seeing and it’s not magical or impressive. Especially in darker environments were the glow is very noticeable.

@@mateocruz7352 it is justified after all the submarine voyage is a dark ride and the fluidity of the characters requires projections than animatronics
