Honestly, the nicknames thing is fine, as stereotypical as it might be, those nicknames are actually used in Latin America for folks and are all affectionate. The problem lies with how the show is the very definition of the whole stereotype of gringos trying to look special by saying they're latino, when in reality they're a diaspora. The show's creator was raised in California to immigrant parents, they are not mexican yet they are trying to pass off the show as an accurate depiction of how childhood is for a latino person in a latino family. Now, a show that does do this very same concept well i'd say is Jorel's Brother, mostly because it was made by, y'know, actual brazilians, who were born in Brazil, live in Brazil and speak brazilian portuguese.
@Silly-rvniii

I see what you mean but chacha and cuqui ta are actually considered a slur in some parts so it’s better to not have those words put on a KIDS show even though it’s based around Hispanic kids that are born in America. @@Silly-rvniiiwhile I understand that in the Spanish language there are a lot of different dialects and it's Inevitable that your going to say something that's going to sound strange at best or disrespectful at worst. Same thing with words like pinche which is a well known Mexican curse word but in puerto Rico it means simply a pinch.

Hey, puerto-rican raised in the U.S. here! SOME things aren't as bad as you think they are? The reason Twitter raised hell about it is because a lot of Latinos OUTSIDE the U.S. thought it was supposed to be representing them, when it seems to be more for 2nd or 3rd gen Latinos living in the U.S. Gordita, Gorda, Gordo, etc. actually ARE common family nicknames in some Latino families...? Normally it's not done to bodyshame, though: it's an affectionate nickname used on people who were REALLY fat babies when they were born. My family called me Gordito when I was little & my nephew is Gordito now because he was like 10 pounds when born. I grew up skinny as fuck though so my grandma switched to calling me "Flaco." (Which basically means skinny boy) It's also common for Spanglish (a weird mix of English and Spanish which is SEMI-improper in casual settings, ie: WITH FAMILY) to be used amongst the 2nd and 3rd generation of an immigrant family growing up in the U.S. I'm a 3rd-gen puerto-rican and we've been in NYC since the 50s. "Oye, primos!" sounds like something my mom would say to her cousins during our summer get-togethers. Probably not when speaking to someone we ain't close to, though. Cuquita, though... there is no excuse for that, lmao. Let alone some of the people behind the scenes being assholes.

While I agree on this being not as terrible as it sounds (Also in this modern times everyone can be offended by anything). People here in Mexico for example don't really care that much about this stuff I guess? Yeah some may get offended but we are so used to being wrongly represented or parodied is kind of indifferent to many here. Kids here consume KZitem most of the time at some parent's phone and God knows what they might watch cause the parents don't lol. The older ones grew more in the era when there was this channel named Jetix and if anything there are more fans of Dragon Ball and Pokémon than Disney. Offensive or not, the issue tends to start with people over the US thinking we might get offended. This then proceeded to videos about it or memes and that's when Mexicans get to know this as a problem. If anything this got many Mexicans to remember "Mucha Lucha" golden era.

Im mexican and i have an explanation for most of this. Although it seems like a stereotype, mexicans really like living with extended family in the same home. Im a realtor and i see it with my clients all the time, like 80% of the time. At one point i even lived with 12 other people in my home. For the kids nicknames, every generation has a “gordita” of the cousins. Its not bullying and my sister is the one we call “gordis”, we call her that because she was the chubbiest baby of our generation. The Cuquita name is a real nickname and also “vagina” in other countries. I also have an aunt in Mexico nicknamed cuca, for Mexicans it means something like “crazy” or “wild”. Lastly, Mexicans born in the US tend to have bad pronunciations and grammar. I am the most fluent of my cousins in Spanish but because i didnt go to school and learn Spanish for 12 years I can’t speak it in an advanced way as needed for a university setting or court, just daily Spanish use. For a 10 year old to have bad grammar im not surprised, I probably said “ oye primos” way more than “oigan primos”

For sounds like a Latin family in LA, where the kids grow up in the USA, Terremotos Highs sounds like a reference to the "Falla de San Andres", and those nicknames are usually used, like we call someone, "oyes Morenita" or "ehi tu guero", "Flaco, por atencion", things like that, but what the main voice actor did was bad, as I would say: "C mamo"

just to preface what so many others seem to miss. As an actual latino immigrant you do realize that terremoto is a colloquial term for a trouble-making child. A band of such children are aptly dubbed "terremotos" walking earthquakes because of the chaos they bring. The sign is an allusion to this term, not the fact that they go through earthquakes, that would be stupid.

Bro I live on the southern border and talk like this all the time “hoy primos” is kind of like street talk and yea it’s not grammatically correct, it’s still accurate to what a child would say here. 2nd, even I call my sister “gorda”, “Gordita”, or “gordis” all meaning fatty and another of my friend’s parents call my friend “flaca” which means skinny so yea we’d call people nicknames based on their weight sometimes. It’s not their actual names and it’s fine. There’s even a woman at our church who’s nickname is “cuquita”. It’s another word for “doll” here but go further south and yea some people do refer to it as a lady’s souther parts. This is the one thing I’ll defend Disney on because the out lash is something only gringos (slang for white or non Mexicans) would get over cause they have no idea what it’s like in our culture

Two things; One, the name of the city could just as easily, and in fact is more likely, to be a reference to cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco, which are both famous for their high Latin population and for being earthquake hotspots. Two, the names might be a little weird, but its not common in Latin American families for people to get nicknames which would be considered really inappropriate in English. Gordita is not something i would be surprised to see a Latin American person call their cousin like it was their actual name. I think both sides of this argument are kinda ignorant and reactionary.
@frosty59

But that's actually kinda right, Spanish is a neo-latin (or at least we call them like that in italy) lenguage, which means it comes from the Latin that was spoken in the Roman empire and other places, wich then became a base for a lot of languages, like Spanish, Italian (my lenguage), France and many others

It is also not an unheard opinion IN Latin America. In Nicaragua it was emphasized a lot that we spoke a mixed version of Castilian. That Spanish as a language didn't exist. And that it was just as correct to say we spoke Nicaraguan.

Terromoto is also slang for "rowdy children" (because the kids in the show are rowdy) and the creator "claims" that the incorrect grammar is intentional (because children don't have perfect grammar, especially if their latin parents didnt teach them spanish. The show is set in California so the characters may not speak perfect spanish) As for the nicknames, "Gordita" is not that bad. Cartoon characters just have stupid names sometimes (i.e. Fat Albert?). And I've seen latin people say that Nacho can be used as short for "Ignacio" (idk how accurate that is so correct me). Idk what the hell they were thinking when they named the other one "vagina" tho (edit apparently it's an actual nickname in some latin american countries) The creator is a californian of mexican descent, and she based the series off of her own upbringing. I doubt she had any ill intentions or was trying to be racist. I think it's a mixture of her just doing a bad job + overreliance on negative stereotypes + certain cultural references/references to her childhood going over general audience's heads

I keep thinking back to Speedy Gonzalez, yknow the speedy mouse from looney tunes. Back in the day he was seen as a stereotype and was removed.
