Disorganized attachment is a type of insecure attachment style that is characterized by inconsistent and hard to predict behavior. It is often a result of abuse and trauma in childhood3. People with disorganized attachment may pursue a loving relationship but then detach or lash out at a partner who gives them that love1. Children with disorganized attachment may show a mix of avoidance or resistance to caregivers, dazed behavior, confusion, apprehension, attention seeking, poor self-soothing skills, difficulty in expressing emotional needs, fearfulness, aggression, low self-esteem, and poor social skills.
In 1990, Main and Solomon, identified a fourth prototype of attachment patterns in children and called it disorganized - disoriented attachment style. It is known that attachment patterns established in infancy, remain settled throughout childhood and adulthood. (Ogden et al., 2006, p.46) Child’s primary attachment in most cases is formed in relationship to the mother, however it depends on the situation, different attachment patterns can be formed with each caregiver (attachment figure). (Ogden et al., 2006, p.47)
While Main and her former student Judith, were reviewing two hundred videotapes of infants from the strange situation project, who failed to fit traditional classifications, noticed that 90% of these infants expressed contradictory and bizarre responses to their caregiver’s presence.
For example, upon reunion, infant would back towards mother freeze in place, collapse on the floor or seemed to fall into trance-like state. (Wallin, 2015. p.22)
According to Main, disorganized attachment can emerge from the child’s interactions with parents who are frightening or frightened or dissociated. Infant with disorganised attachment experiences “fright without solution”. (Wallin, 2015. p.23)
