I just found this channel. I've been fly fishing for steelhead and tying steelhead flies for about 30 years. This is the first time I've heard about the 'tear drop' shape idea. It makes sense. As for your 'close out patterns', it's what my buddies and I call 'getting goofy'. If nothing else works, we get goofy. One trip, a Royal Coachman dry, size 16 from a trout fly box found it's way into my steelhead box. After no hits for most of the day I got goofy and tied it on, mostly out of frustration. Wham!!

I live in the PNW (Gresham) and it's my first year Steelheading. Two handers are the way to go around here and I'm learning why. I still haven't caught a big steelhead/salmon yet and my approach is bring in a 12.5' 7wt spey rod for swinging flies like you've shown and then I also bring a 9' 8wt single hand rod and I try nymphs and egg patterns. My question is my approach common among others around here or am I waisting my time and energy with the single hand egg/nymph approach? Again, I haven't caught one and I know this works on smaller fish and rivers, but it really feels like I'm wasting my time (and energy) with the single hand rod on these larger rivers. Thanks!

What type towel was it and what color was That towel?????

It was a maroon (red/brown) towel. Not a popular steelhead color but actually a really good change up color for Upper Skeena waters.
