Paris has become my second home and, like my first home, the issues of racial profiling from police needs to be addressed with more than empty promises. One of the many things I love about the French is they hold themselves to a high standard. 99% is never enough for them. I hope to see that perfectionism carried out in law. Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité. Vive la France.

To me the Frenchness of Jacquemus is somehow refreshing, because there's so much culture in France that is worth highlighting. American, Italian, British brands will often claim their national heritage, successfully in my opinion. But French brands tend to see themselves as not representing France, but rather as representing a universal pinnacle of fashion (and they also happen to be French, because that's where the highest of high fashion can be found, la di da). Jacquemus reverses that, rather than elevating his fashion by becoming "universal", he roots it in a culture that's universally loved (especially the South of France culture), and in doing so is now elevating his brand while keeping this grassroots simplicity that makes the brand so casually cool.

Imma be that guy: In French “chouchou” can also mean being a favorite person in a certain context. It’s often used to say you are the favorite student of a teacher (and sometimes you get a better treatment than the other students) “T’es le chouchou de Mme Pierre” "You are the favorite student of Miss Pierre” It can also be declined in a verb “chouchouter” in some case, but rarely. I am from Québec, so maybe it is not used like that in France but I am pretty confident it is! 🥖 Ok bye

Congratulations on the video! You have clearly grasped the main themes of the collection, which beautifully blends the eras of Marie Antoinette and Princess Diana. It's important to note that this collection is not just a singular story, but rather represents the new direction for Jacquemus. The keyword driving this collection, and now Jacquemus as a fashion house itself is "elevation," encompassing the image, fabrics, silhouettes, and overall wardrobe. The team has devoted great attention to creating new narratives and improving in every category (from RTW to Leathergoods,...). There"s a strong emphasis on dresses this season, introducing new seasonal animations of iconic styles, as well as exclusive pieces that enrich the ceremonial offerings. Congrats on spotting the new bag, can't disclose anything about it yet but don't expect it to come this season ! But will definitely be a big introduction at some point.

Even though the Fashion on that runway is not my bag, I really loved how you explained it and I could appreciate it from a new angle. Brilliant work! And cause you appreciate us fashion nerds giving you kind corrections: The 18th Century Robe à la Française is actually a subtype of overgarment, the Mantua. There were others worn by French nobles and other monied folks, like the Robe à la Polonaise (the Polish) that was the epitomy of Chouchou with the back part of the skirt puffed up. It's featured very prominently in the 2006 Coppola film when Louis bids goodbye to Marie-Antoinette before going on the hunt, and she is left alone, standing in an entryway hoping he will finally get her pregnant. Also, the more streamlined Robe à l'Anglaise (the English) was popular in the later part of the 18th century.

The shoes can be also a reference to the square toe shoes from the era of louis xv, also the polka dots tough diana reference is most likely can also be referenced back to ‘mouches’ : black velvet / rat skin patches used by the aristocrat ladies that started as a coverup for small pox scares and turned into fashion pieces .

THANK YOU!! So many "reviews" are quick to degrade this show and ignore what was trying to be said. There was a lot of focus on the Princess Di inspo while ignoring the clear Marie Antoinette influence. I admit this isn't for me, although Jacquemus always states gorgeous shows, but there is something in his dismissal that really bothers me. I didn't hear anything about the shoes (interesting and ugly), jewelry and bags.

i will say that the bloomer looking blue gingham print underpants does look a lot like when, particularly, Black men sag. Like its a staple of hood fashion, and i find it kinda ironic that jacquemus is unintentionally using (maybe intentionally idk) that imagery even though most white french (usually older) folks actually hate the look. i still really enjoyed the show though! it was a pretty masterful take on the chou chou/ Lady Di/ Marie Antoinette concept. (not that i have to prove myself, but i am french and american if that helps legitimize what i’m saying lol.)
@julietteh283
Жыл бұрын
Yes I thought of sagging too! I found it was a funny bit of fashion commentary from Jacquemus (although maybe not meant on purpose), as you have those elaborate undergarments for women, very intricate and delicate and then bloomers with checks on them for men. This is very typical for modern fashion I think ( with male-geared garments generally being more boring when you step out of high fashion and designer stuff) whereas in historical fashion men also had very complex clothing with interesting construction

What struck me with this runway is the regressive side of it. First aesthetically with the cherry jewerly, the little frilly outfits that are almost doll like, emphasized by the drawstrings and scrunching. Even the name chouchou hints at youth and childhood to me. I’m French and that’s what you call a little child sometimes. It’s also a type of sweets ; once gain pretty childlike. And as you mentioned, scrunchies, mostly worn by young girls. Then thematically I find this show to be quite nostalgic and regressive : Versailles is all about royalty, princesses, pretty dresses, very much out of a kids fantasy land. As a young girl in France I used to read a series about schoolgirls at the Versailles court aha. Then historically you could look at Versailles as a bygone era, with social roles and castes being both simple and clear cut as well as cruel. Once again very much recalling childhood for me. Maybe like an infant phase of France as a country? It’s also an era many people look back to fondly as it’s been heavily aestheticized and romanticized even though it was a period of stark inequality and both physical and symbolical violence. Looking to such an era, especially in these tough political times in France is kinda like anchoring yourself, although perhaps in a naive way. I sort of found it like a way to grasp at Frances civilizational foundations, finding common ground. Also maybe for Simon it’s a way to find some institutional weight. Very French and easy to read for foreigners, unlike some of his earlier inspiration which really speaks to the south of France and marseille in particular, which is more street than high fashion. Versailles and the type of historical fashion you speak of is an easy way to get legitimacy. But doing it well is a challenge (that the brand met, imo), so I’m not saying it’s lazy (just a bit simple maybe) Ok I’ll stop there lol

I don't think Jacquemus will ever be true luxury because of the poor quality of their products. The cost has gone up considerably, but the quality has remained the same. I own pieces from his earlier collections (ss 2014-aw 2018) and most of the construction and quality of the material is ... bad. I bought some things from maybe two collections ago and again, the material is just cheap and the construction underwhelming. Most of it in your hands is indistinguishable from fast fashion offerings. He's a marketing genius and a great creative director, but he's not a clothing designer. Accessory designer, sure. I want those tights with the rose and the shoes. Anyway, it was fun to hear you break down the references for the show!
