One of the most powerful tornadoes in history crossed Wheeler Lake out of Lawrence County and into southern Limestone County as we watched from the highway 31 bridge in Decatur, AL around 4:15 pm April 27, 2011. The 3/4 mile wide tornado was mostly wrapped in rain at this time but we did see the rotation in rain bands associated with the bear's cage as it crossed the river. This was the same tornado that had devastated Hackleburg and Phil Campbell, AL less than an hour earlier. Watch closely at 1:12 on the video as a lightning strike illuminates a portion of the tornado to the left of the strike.
