10:50 Weird complain. Last time I checked international waters are patrolled by navies of nations, not private military ships. Why aren't they making their own ships? You might underestimate the structure such a spaceport represents. Imagine all the shipyards in our current age, if the need did arise they would drop building freighters and cruise liners at moment's notice and build military ships with priority if their respective national governments ordered this. In the end the government has the monopoly on force. Yet during peace times the same dockyards are used to fulfill private orders. So you see it doesn't matter if the shipyard is build privately or by the government. If the need be it would fulfill the governments order with priority anyways.

The power is in every adult's hand equally, then it is periodically extended by them to the select few, the government has total power and the government is us. Given your comments, you're still in the early learning stages of Distant Worlds. The first game had a tremendous learning curve - accessibility was not its strong suit - and it sounds like DW2 isn't much better in that regard. But if you could get past that curve, awaiting you was one of the all-time best space 4X games ever made. It's been many years since I last played it but I remember being engrossed for months in just one game, fighting multiple empires in a pretty epic struggle. But even then I automated numerous functions because the game was so darn deep.
@SlimThrull

Yeah it took me three or four plays of Distant Worlds Universe to really appreciate the game. The learning curve is pretty intense (that and the UI isn't helpful due to it being so lackluster - something I hope they fix in DW2). @SlimThrull

@@OfARisenFall You're right. But only to a point. Yes, the level of depth is going to cause all sorts of issues with a GUI. That's sort of the nature of GUIs. The simpler the game, the easier the GUI is to make and for it to be understood. However, there are a few improvements that DWU could have done that would have been helpful. A few would be fairly straightforward (some of which already seems to be in DW2, actually). Others would be harder to do. Though, I hate making the comparison, look at Stellaris. While not as complex as DWU, it's in the same genre. They did a fantastic job of making the GUI clean and very intuitive (for the most part anyway). And yes, Stellaris was a Triple-A game. The producers had the money to throw at it to make sure the GUI was as good as it was. DWU didn't have that luxury. All that said, I was actually talking about the UI not just the GUI (though, much of the same above applies to this as well). The contextual right click always feels a bit off. The idea that you have to control-click to bring up a menu also feels a bit off. As a new player, it took some time getting used to the rather clunky UI. It's not bad, per se. Just a bit clunky.

I still play Distant Worlds Universe, and have been really excited for this one. I was just about to pre-order, but decided to look at some gameplay footage. If this is anything like the final product, I'm a little shocked. I knew it was going to be a remake of Distant Worlds Universe, but in 3D, but some of this looks exactly the same. The icons, the sounds, the little crosshair around the selected ships, they're identical. So much of this is identical, that it looks like someone just stuck 3D graphics on the 2D game, which I suppose is what happened. Personally, the 3D looks nice, but DW:U came out in 2014, the core of this game is from March 2010, I expected a little more after this 12 year development cycle, 8 years since the last. You'd think there would be some changes, or improvements, something bouncing around in their heads they wanted to add? This looks exactly like the last one, with some graphics added in some spots but not really in others. I know it's a small team, and a small company, but this feels lacking. Well, hopefully it's moddable, and hopefully there are updates planned to radically change the gameplay. I don't like Stellaris (the combat/jump lanes), so I'm just floating adrift waiting for something to challenge Sins of a Solar empire, and DW:U. I don't think I'll be pre-ordering though :/ sorry Matrix, I'm not sure if I want to buy DW:U twice for minimal improvements, but I'll eagerly await the final product

I think that the ability to selectively automate things is something you need for a game at this scale, it also allows you to do interesting things like life in the day of a captain or fleet and basically playing as that one fleet and doing stuff whilst the AI does everything else, or playing it purely as a macro game etc. There's tons of room for all kinds of interesting play. On the subject of the private sector, I think it works that way simply because something as massive as a starport would naturally usually be a goverment project and not a private endevour, at least initially, and having to deal with the private sector doing it's own thing would be frustrating and you'd just find new ways of taxing ship building anyway. Though I believe that a large portion of the money paid to you isn't purely the ship construction but also materials that they buy from you to build said ship along with the appropriate patents.

If it's anything like dw1 , the most likely reason you have fuel bottleneck is lack of castlon mines, not enough docking ports on those mines, and possibly no starports over planets which limits how much can be shipped there at a time. Always best to add more docking ports to both gas mines and starports that have shipyards.
@RepublicOfPlay
2 жыл бұрын
Hmm the issue was 50,000 caslon was stored in one place, and a few systems over another station had 0. Not sure why the logistics kept dumping fuel more and more into the first place, when its limit was like 4000 or something.
@BGP369
2 жыл бұрын
@@RepublicOfPlay that's a throwback bug from the original game. The way I balanced fuel distribution was to only build starports with shipyards at 1 or max 3 central planets, usually only 1 becos I always rush Bakuras Shipyard. After that, I purposely overbuild on fuel planets both Caslon and Hydrogen, putting a station with 10 docks on each early game, upping to 25 docks late game. When refueling fleets, I typically send them to these gas miners directly, not starports over planets. If the fleet is too large, you simply need to retrofit your frequently used gas mines to have more storage. If you are dead set having fuel balanced on multiple planets, make sure they have a starports with storage and docking bays, then wait while the private sector transports stuff over. Less starports means faster resource balancing.

In distant worlds universe, if you took an aggressive stance early on with colonization and such then you would always be more powerful than the AI, do to the logic of : more land=more people=more taxes+resources=stronger economy=stronger military. There was obviously more to it with galactic trade, the building of great wonders and the types resources you had in your space. The AI races follows certain automation policies (how you set your own automation and initially is specific to each race) that specifically affect how how much they put into research, expansion, and their military, so an optimized policy puts you miles ahead of most races.

Looks decent, the one thing I really love about what I saw was the scale of things which is far better than games like Stellaris and Sins of a Solar Empire (tiny things are tiny, big are big, and massive are massive, a small ship looks like a speck of dust next to a planet). But it clearly lacks in many areas compared to other big games in the genre. What I really want to see in this genre is a game with the depth of Stellaris' gameplay (with a bit less micromanagement which was ridiculous at times) and the epic combat of Sins of a Solar Empire with its amazing visuals that none can even come close to (in Stellaris I don't even watch the fights, I see numbers, and if mine are higher I just attack and win which is a huge negative in the experience of the game).

Great review. Balanced look at features, functionality and presentation with exploration of some of the lore/game-play decisions. Will keep an eye on this, though I'm still enjoying DW1 as my go-to for weekend complexity, haha. Strange that you couldn't keep ships firing from a distance, I would have considered that a basic addition to any 4x combat AI. Perhaps it will need to be something modded in as a behaviour. It might have been omitted to prevent being an over-powered strategy with no counter, but a game emphasising many ways of playing should have supported it, considered that, and allowed for counter mechanics. They could have made the actual detonation of torpedoes require a certain distance or they're ineffective, so AI could rush forward to engage them or scramble fighters to shoot down torpedoes. Leaving a 'firing line' mechanic out seems more to me like they wanted to speed up development/QA time.

@@FrostbitexP "Distant Worlds 2" Thats exactly how this kind of stuff works....Just like how pretty much every online MMO copied bits and pieces from Everquest/Ultima Online.

Eh, there is plenty of empire building in the first game. Also the first game is lot more fun to play with all the automation off, its not overwhelming in any way.

Didnt even design your own ship yet son? Anyways I played both Stellaris and distant world and let me tell you distant world is that much better once you get the hang of it.

I did, as I said in the video I made long range torpedo ships but they dont keep their distance and nobody can figure out why

I am on a budget, so why buy this when I can still play Stellaris. For goodness’s sake, there are many modern space strategy games I don't buy, because I still love playing Master of Orion 2 from the late 90s! So many gamers buy 6 space games and then end up just playing one.

I agree with his points, honest and fair. I saw many first impression plays, and noticed the same issues. Unfortunately, fans of the game get angry if you day any criticism, event constructive. I surely hope the beta testers are also constructive and not just filling devs with praise. In the end, it would be a better product, if they listen to criticism.

Do you want more arcade or more 4x? Distant worlds is far more 4x than stellaris, but stellaris is far simpler and faster to learn and play. Its a taste thing i guess.

I’d recommend Stellaris, its far cheaper and a good starter game for this kind of thing. If you find yourself wanting more depth, then maybe look into DW2

Huge Distant Worlds fan NO interest in DW 2 I think its shit and its a shame because I really realllly wanted to throw money at it. The 3d sucks, the graphics sucks, the gameplay is the 1:1 bloody same as DWU with tiny tiny changes.. and ui is nightmarish, the list goes on and on, and i doubt greatly it will improve, because they would of told the streamers to haitus and wait for build to improve... nope, release will be shocking.

Was in the alpha early on. I was so put off by the lack of quality in the visuals and overbearing interface that I just didn't want to spend time with it. I'm into a lot of strategy games, but the "game" is hidden under a simulation that's not particularly fun or interesting. A shame...
