This has become my favorite method of distressing. There's nothing like beating the crap out of helpless pieces of cloth with a blunt metal instrument.

I think the use of the steel plate on the bottom is the key. I have been researching distressing fabrics and it is interesting how many different ways there are. The owner of WellWorn clothing has a great video. He is a big fan of torch guns

If you lock a hack saw blade in a vice you can then run the fabric over it with just a Lil pressure to get the threads easy

Would this work with herringbone fabric? It's quite tough, so I'm not sure.

Youd need to be careful as it would take a while to get any noticable hammering damage however the sharp side would cut quickly still. Youd also need to be careful it didnt thread too much
