Thank you so much for this info. I have a toddler and there have been times that I have looked up from my phone and he is just staring at me, waiting for me to react to what he tried to show me. This is very hard to admit but it’s the truth. Everywhere we go, people are always on phones. I don’t want to be a slave to my phone.

The future ramifications of what you just described are yet to be discovered. An entire generation of kids who know their parent's and other people's faces mainly as bent down and staring at a screen...is frightening. Thank you for admitting that you are guilty like so many others, myself included. We need to individually work to re-prioritize society to be face to face, in real time, in real life, all the time. Otherwise we risk never getting real life back. It could be gone forever.

Was just telling my adult children who are in their early 20’s how thankful I am that we did not have this technology when they were young. We held off on getting smart phones way past most households in our suburbia community, and I am setting mine down more and more, longer and longer. Thank you for your efforts to shine a light on this social dilemma. It surprises me how often we are told of the mental health risks with smart phones and yet I see very few people trying to taper or stop their usage. When I tell my friends Im off my phone for a few days they all say “yeah, I need to do that too,” but sadly they do not.

How has it gone for you? I ordered a light phone (hasn't arrive yet), sold my iPhone on ebay (haven't reset/shipped it yet) and I'm wondering what it's going to be like. I have a young 1 year old son. I keep thinking...I won't be able to take pictures of him. I can't do this, or that. But then I realize I won't even be tempted to be scrolling on anything, and I will just spend the time with him and the wife. Every single video I've seen of this minimalist thing says it was hard at first, but it ended up being such an improvement in so many areas of life.

@@fairandfree9824 Hey there! Thanks for reaching out ☺️ It’s been about a year and two months and I’m still living the dumbphone life, full-time. It’s going wonderfully and I genuinely never think about it anymore. Full disclosure- I switched from the LightPhone 2 to the Sunbeam Wireless Orchid because I felt super left out not receiving photos. I still have so much love for the LightPhone, though. Such a gorgeous device! Regarding photos, I bought a digital camera but I almost never take it anywhere with me. I look back on how many pictures I used to take and I get so overwhelmed! There will be lots of bumps in the road and moments of frustration but as you go along, you’ll start to figure out a system that works for you. It’s a different lifestyle for sure, but it’s totally worth it! You are making a great choice ☺️

We bank at USAA, a military bank and they do not have ANY branches in our state so the only way we can deposit money is by check through the app or direct deposit. Also you are correct about forgetting we used to function before the conveniences we have now. We got rid of our microwave, and I also am relearning how we did things before having it. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm glad you've found a solution that works for you. When I first became a published author, I felt the need for a smartphone to stay in touch with readers and email my publisher while traveling. I didn't take into account that I wouldn't always have Internet access say, on a road trip or in a remote location. I discovered, upon my return, the humbling fact that others could get along without missing me. Nowadays, not having a signal is just fine. I'd rather engage with the here and now than stare at a screen. I'm thinking of getting a light phone because it's so much cheaper. Although I don't struggle over my smartphone, I do need to practice more restraint with my PC. I'll take your video as a reminder to dock my screen time more.

One thing I've found is that most cheap flip phones still have internet browsers and many social media apps that can't be deleted. It may be enough to deter some, but for me it wasn't enough. Two other internet free phones are the Sunbeam F1($195), and Consumer Cellular's flip phone the Link 2 ($59 but also you have to use their service). Mudita and Punkt are two more but they're also pricey. The Sunbeam uses T9 texting and apparently has good voice to text option. I've heard the light phone is working on a voice to text option too but they haven't given a release date for that feature.

@@emilydean2748 that's exactly what I was going to say. Most cheap flip phones still have internet and though it would be clunky, it probably wouldn't be enough to keep me off of it. Honestly, when you hear the cons you aren’t saving time or money in the long run by ditching the smart phone. Printing a list cost money, not having a list you buy too much or forget things and have to go back. A new baby monitor is more money. Just use it in moderation. The planner and transferring to app’s… is time, time is money. You are in a technical world on KZitem trying to go back to non-Tech world, contradictory. Smartphone was named that for a reason. It can be lifesaving also. An elderly lady didn’t want a phone her daughter insisted. She got confused and drove in reverse over an embankment. If she hasn’t had a phone she would have died.
@joanneandrea7298
2 жыл бұрын
I think you might be missing her point. She didn't get the phone to save money. She got the phone to break her addiction to spending so much time on social media. Your comment of "just use it in moderation" - I think if she was capable of doing that, she would have done that, to begin with. Not to mention, MODERATION is not in the vocabulary of someone who is addicted to something. She also mentioned that with the inconveniences that having that dumb phone (planners, printing, etc) created, it was still very much worth getting it. She's not being contradictory - that's a silly statement. She's still uploading, making videos, running her channel, etc. The fact she doesn't have access to social media during the day does not mean she's trying to go back to a "non-tech" world. Lastly, your story of the smartphone being life-saving is correct, but mute in this case because her dumb phone............. IS A PHONE.
@Sanecrist
2 жыл бұрын
The smartphone was named that for marketing. Ironically, they also make the user dumb because the phone does all the thinking. The old lady could have just as easily used a tomtom or garmin or any other GPS. Her phone could have died and she would have been in the same situation as not having one at all. Smartphones are helpfull, but are used morr as a crutch than a tool. We are impairing ourselves by using them for every mundane task possible. Which I think is Lisa's point in switching phones. People used to write lists by hand. There are people that still prefer to write a list by hand. Lisa is figuring out what features she misses most about a "smart"phone and will invest accordingly for added convenience in the future. Not every thing is about time and money. Sometimes feeling human is most important. I do think she'll save money in the long run though. When your phone breaks, you MUST replace it right away. Everything ensuring your survival depends on it, right?If you have a few gadgets separately, let's say a GPS and a point and shoot camera, you can replace them when you get the chance. You'll know a roadtrip is coming up or a birthday party. You can decide when to make another small investment instead of forced to make a huge one.

First time commenting on your channels... A genuine "thank you" for trying to live intentionally! Perhaps, this is the only way we are able to remain as human beings. So, what you're doing is huge, and please keep sharing! 🙏

Thank you for sharing! I understand that freedom that comes from switching to a dumb phone. Me and my husband did it a few years ago and I remember this weird disconnected feeling at first that made me feel sad but then a freeing feeling and being able to be more present. We have smart phones again but thinking I might need to get rid of mine again. I do so many of the same things you do, checking my phone when walking upstairs or making breakfast for my kiddos when I should be present.

I got my first smart phone less than 2 years ago. I had a dumb phone with a keyboard before that and I sure miss it! Sadly it died. I struggled finding a dumb phone like that to replace it (they were all flip phones or were not compatible with our provider) and I ended up giving in on getting a smart phone. Ease of texting was the only reason I got a smart phone. I just could not imagine using a flip phone to text and I would feel disconnected from some of my family and friends if I couldn't text with ease. But, oh, it does suck you in, even though I am not on Instagram, Facebook, etc. Frankly, I barely utilize the potential for my phone since I prefer paper lists and planners, and already had the old style baby monitor, etc. Even then it still sucks me in. I am very intrigued by the phone you have and may have to switch. Thank you for sharing!

I never understand the directions problem. I've always used a Garmin in my car. It's about $100 and works better at it's satellite and doesn't rely on cell coverage.

I’m so proud of you Lisa! I’ve been more mindful of how much time I’m spending on my phone. I’m so much more productive which is a blessing and I praise God for!!!

Does this phone receive larger texts (from people who type way too much on the smart phone)? What about receiving photo texts? I tried switching back to a flip phone but had so much trouble with the texting. This phone sounds great!!!!! I just need something that can’t handle long texts.

Wow, good for you! I wish my daughter would unplug herself from her phone. She’s literally on it all the time, neglecting her kids in the process. So sad to watch.

I switched back to a flip phone several years ago and lasted a whole year before it stopped working properly. It was an amazing experience!

I would love to know... what do you do when you're nursing the baby when the house is quiet? I find nursing the baby late at night/early mornings when the other 3 are asleep is when I am on my smartphone the most. I also read my kindle at those times, but I'm wondering what you do?

Consider to switch soon when i can afford it :) I also Am Very sensitive to the impulses. After all these years and so much time spend watching a screen. Its time to go back to enjoy being with Myself, stimulating creativity. And actually finding out how i Am without this part of technology....

Will any cell phone company provide service? Does it work on 4G or 5G? How was the actual service/quality during a phone call ? One thumbs up or two? Thanks for sharing!

For the past 3 years, I've had a smartphone that is not connected to the internet, so basically just text, talk and photos. It's inconvenient at times (especially when I'm lost and need directions) but overall, it's been fine. I do find that I'm more connected to my laptop now though. But it's fairly effective to just turn off the laptop and make it kind of inconvenient to use. xo

Your explanation for desiring a dumbphone was literally me. I just bought the same model as you. So ready to rid myself of Apple and iPhone. Especially now that they just released a pregnant man emoji…

Before smart phones we used a GPS for travelling and my husband has a flip phone but he just uses it for calling me and emergencies. Not sure we can get a light phone in Canada.. personally I never use Instagram other than look a something someone sends me and don't have a blog either..maybe a good thing at my age....I am of baby boomer age so I use it more for messaging and texting friends and family and recipes mostly. Some valid points to ponder for sure.

Thank you! I feel like this “smart” phone is a life stealer. Can I ask why you chose the phone you chose and is there another that you wish you had tried instead?
