This video documents a "Divergence of Birds" art installation and a community engagement workshop by artist and activist Carolyn Monastra at NYC Bird Alliance (known as NYC Audubon at the time) on Governors Island in NYC Harbor. The soundscape was designed by musician Asa Marder.
"Divergence of Birds" is the artist's large-scale conceptual art project addressing the impacts of climate-impacts on the birds of North America. The silk banners in the first room and the cutouts (both paper and vinyl) in the second room are all birds that have been sighted on the island. Visitors to the exhibit were invited to a special one-day workshop to learn about the exhibit and to "adopt-a-bird" by making a collage about one of these threatened birds.
To learn more about the artist's process of using the paper cutouts and for additional information about how you can protect birds go to www.DivergenceOfBirds.org and www.NYCBirdAlliance.org
