A characters who's name is based on the fact that he has four main fears (which is among the sappiest things I've ever heard of )...only five factions to choose from. The very basis of this story forces the characters to be one dimensional and painfully uninteresting. The plot is uninteresting. The world is uninteresting. This is the movie equivalent of flat soda or non-alcoholic beer...just why?

I never got into Divergent as a book. None of the tests made sense, there was not much effectiveness in splitting them up into factions, and the main character felt like a vehicle for the reader to watch the world through their eyes. And I'd argue that book is a good example of how to do dystopia wrong. There should have been a legit reason for splitting everyone up, say to create tension between them and keep them not focused on the government, and they were somehow crippled into not questioning the government (like no reading, making choices, or saying 'I' in Anthem). its frustrating when there is so much potential for this.

I think TV series and movie adaptations of novels are a mixed bag. On one hand, you have a brilliant, very well acted adaptation of a novel like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and The Hunger Games. On the other hand, you have things like Eragon, A Wrinkle in Time and The Golden Compass which are generally lackluster adaptations. Most fall in the middle-- I usually find the book is better, and the movie is nothing to write home about. Sometimes the series is better than the book-- many fans of Dexter found the books to be too alliterative and creepy.
@alexanderfix3629
8 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: the director of The Golden Compass was a huge fan of the books and shot the movie as a shot for shot remake of the novel. Then the studio got worried they'd alienate the religious audience because of the book's themes and cut the movie to ribbons, turning a fantastic adaptation into a mediocre steampunk-fantasy that's only good for pissing off fans and keeping the kids out of your hair for two hours. Don't you just love Hollywood?

Samson could make a great film. It's a tragic story, has a guy with massive muscles (so you could market that I guess), fights off tons of enemies like an action hero, is betrayed by the woman he loved and willingly sacrifices himself at the end, taking a ton of the enemy with him. It would work.

Here's the dream dictionary entry for "Raven:" To see a raven in your dream symbolizes betrayal, disharmony, misfortune, and death. A lot of the questions about how the system works will probably be explained in Allegiant. (One would hope.) Per the books, Tris doesn't fit into the factions system because she's divergent - and neither do you, because we are all technically divergent. you brought up one of my thoughts. people are complex and don't fit nicely into categories. if this test was tried in real life, everyone would be a divergent. btw, i just watched Luther, another film in which someone takes on the system. you should review it.
@mackenziepreston9188
8 жыл бұрын
+James Tuttle It's actually a bit more complex than shown in the movie, *SPOILER ALERT* In the books (and I REALLY hope in the third movie) it explains how people were genetically modified with the idea of removing certain genetic traits from humanity (eg being afraid/lying/selfish etc) but when they removed these traits it actually damaged other genetic markers too, like removing fear also removed compassion. The Divergent people are generations removed from the people who were originally genetically-damaged and with that and the help of the serums, they have become genetically pure, which is why they show more than one trait (eg being compassionate and fearless and self-preserving). ALSO, people in the factions have no idea they are part of this experiment to create genetically pure humans, which is why they seem to be so obsessed with keeping the faction system runnning So basically yeah, we aren't genetically modified and so everyone would turn up as Divergent on the test :) I hope my explanation makes some sort of sense, idk if people would even be that interested, but incase it doesn't make sense look at this divergent.wikia.com/wiki/Genetically_Damaged
