Thanks for the video. I was surprised to see AT&T presented as No.1 so I went to an online total return calculator to check it out. Based on total returns, an investment in AT&T ten years ago would have provided the equivalent of a compounding 5.98% annual return. For comparison I randomly checked Microsoft and found for that same ten years you would have had a compounding 27.8% annual return. Thinking that maybe MSFT wasn't a good comparison because some investors shy away from "growth stocks", I then put Johnson & Johnson into the calculator as even cautious investors usually see it as a good one. For the ten years it would have given a compounding annual return of 13.78%. Isn't total return what we should be striving to achieve with our investments?

If one had bought 4 shares of McDonalds stock in 1966 at IPO, you would have close to 3/4 of a million dollars today after all the share splits, interest earned, inflation etc. That said, I’m thinking of buying 10-20 shares of each of the 65 companies on the dividend aristocrat list over next five to ten years to hold, which I will trade options against in retirement for income, and will into a trust to my kids after I pass away someday. I’m hoping that, in addition to my FERS, TSP, Roth IRA and Traditional IRA, plus my individual brokerage account, the hope is this will be a great long term investment that can enrich my kids one day.

My first stepdad was an IBM Engineer. He got stock options early in the companies history. All he has to do for income now that he’s retired is sell shares before earnings, then sell a put options after the dips, and covered calls against his shares in the peaks before earnings. When you own a few thousand shares of IBM that you bought for $4-10 share early in your career, you’re more likely to hold them long.
@jakejennings5152

1000 shares or 10 monthly put contracts at $126 strike would pay you $3,000 or so in premiums, and the current share price just dipped about $10-15 share a few days ago, right after earnings. Someone who bought a few hundred shares of IBM back in 1978, would be quite well off today had they never sold a single one and reinvested 100% of the dividends, plus, they would likely have several thousand shares now. That means they could literally sell off half their shares on the date of every earnings call where the stock’s performed very well, wait for the stock to correct in price, buy back in a much larger number of shares each time.
