Divis and the Black Mountain is an iconic part of the skyline of Belfast. It comprises 1,050 hectares of upland landscape which can be explored through a range of walking trails. These offer stunning views over Belfast city and beyond. The landscape is the largest single urban green space in the Belfast City Council area and comprises a mosaic of grassland and heathland bog, home to a host of wildlife and archaeological remains. Resting in the heart of the Belfast Hills and rising to 1,568ft, the peaks define much of the western horizon of the city.
Divis and the Black Mountain is steeped in nature and has a deep cultural connection with its adjoining communities. An iconic part of the Belfast city skyline, its variety of walking trails offers impressive views over Belfast and beyond. Over the next three years, the 'Divis A View to the Future' project by National Trust NI will see ambitious plans that provide for both people and nature. Through the delivery of a series of initiatives, this will be a co-creative journey with local communities and stakeholders including the Heritage Lottery Fund, Garfield Weston and NIEA.
Initiatives include development of walking trails that connect directly with the city, restoration and adaptive reuse of historic buildings, and large scale peatland restoration. Additionally, it includes the roll out of a three year community activity plan and interpretation strategy covering the nature, culture and history of this landscape. This represents a significant step in the National Trust NI vision to co-create one of the most accessible urban upland green spaces in these Isles, where people and place thrive together in a healthy, nature-rich and beautiful wild landscape.
