They were so great back then! Saw them live 3 times, @ '91 to '92. One was their 1st formal, paid gig (not busking on the street in Dallas' West End) as part of the literary festival at a community college; the not very big performance hall was maybe a quarter full, & the tickets cost--nothing! Another time was when Garrison Keillor came to do his radio show (then called "The American Radio Company of the Air") from Dallas. He liked them so much he cut a skit to give 'em another set.

Wow! Those harmonies!! I'd forgotten how magical they were. Laura had the most amazing stage presence. Gorgeous, and a great musician. RIP Saw them Many, many times in their early years. Many, many times with Natalie. It's all good.

Yeah, but you've got to admit the Maines version of the Dixie Chicks was in a league of their own compared to the prior group.

not a cut on the band as it stands today, but this line up was something special and i am sorry i missed out. too busy being a single dad i guess. love their sound and laura's rich lead. did you know you can count on 1 hand the number of female lead singers who also played stand up bass? she was special and we lost a good one for sure.

I am still looking for the ORIGINAL Dixie Chicks cuts. Ty so much for this gem. ( I don't even count Natalie) I watched the Original band on PBS Austin City Limits back in the day and loved their music and always will

Natalie was the complete opposite of Laura. Young and a bit loud and the A type personality to lead the two sisters. With Laura they performed with great harmony and musicianship. On wide open spaces they only reformed the lyrics and studio musicians played the instruments. Laura was genuine and had great style and Class.

I always feel as if the Erwin sisters brought Laura over to their side in a dispute over the band's direction so that Robin felt obliged to leave (this song serving as her farewell), then squeezed Laura out too, and then replaced both former lead singers with just Natalie so that the two Erwins could NEVER be outvoted in the group. That's NOT a fair accounting of what happened, but not entirely misleading either. I wish the Erwins could have left if they were dissatisfied and left Robin and Laura to try to keep the original sound of the Chicks going. That said, the second album, with Robin and Laura as mainstays but Marti and Emily starting to move things in their direction, is my favorite. The Natalie era produced great tracks of a different kind, but nothing that fills the hole in my heart left by the original lineup.

Those were the bluegrass years. By '95 DC went pop. Now country is hop. Gaslighter? First album in 14 years, too long to be relevant. My opinion: if the sisters can still do bluegrass pickin', how about a tribute album to Laura? Dump Maines for the project, get some bluegrass singers and players. No drums, no electric, go back to the roots and stay there.

Loving the before Natalie years. Natalie tuned the other two into drugs, lesbianism, and satanism.
