EXACTLY how NOT to set up a FLS die. This video actually shows how to set it up the wrong way and they have even made an error in doing this by failing to account for spring in the ram. The die is set up midway in this video and is capable of sizing the case a further 2 or 3 thou but this amount may or may not be required. If it fits in your rifle with slight resistance on the last 1/3 of downtravel of the bolt then it's sized right , the chamber of your rifle is the best gauge or guide you have when sizing a case. The very fact that gunsmiths use go and no go gauges to measure chambers tells us that this is the easiest and most accurate way to determine the size that your case should be. The other glaring mistake when sizing was that this guy had to use 2 hands to get the sizing started, he will never get consistent headspace measurements as he has failed to brush the inside of the necks with graphite or similar for lubrication. That unlubed expander ball pulling back out of the dry neck as the case is extracted from the die will be pulling those cases longer and have him scratching head about why some cases go in ok but some are hard to chamber.

the only slightly confusing thing for me was the talk on the seating die. He says he just hit the brass and not the shell holder. I guess Im curious why he doesnt want to crimp the case mouth. Is it two separate actions?

A couple of problems I saw in this video, first off never just use the book adjustments for a FL sizing die, many will be working your brass far too Much! Get a Hornady headspace a gauge and measure a new brass and then fire in your gun and measure again checking for stretch, some chambers you can fire 2-3 times before your growth limits the bolt getting sticky or not closing on your loaded rounds, others one firing Ina. Tight chamber and your going to need to set back the shoulder. The only way to limit headspace and get a custom fit for YOUR gun chamber is with the sue of a Hornady headspace gauge,this is much safer, more of a custom fit and also extends brass life i.e. Less case head separation issues. Next problem is his idea of setting up the seating stem, never measure off the bullet tip they can vary from .002-.007 of an inch. Buy a bullet comparator and use it! This measures the bullet off the ogive and not the tip far more accurate way to seat bullets and have them closer than a poly tip or worse a not poly tip where the me play can vary again. The ogive of the bullet far more so consistent measuring point for cartridge overall length.

Yes, you can do it his way, OR, you can do just what was shown in the video and be fine. Some days I just get tired of the actual demonstration of the Dunning Kruger theory.

Unless your dies are seriously out of spec, you’re not going to over size your brass by starting with the sizing die simply contacting the shell holder.

Even with all these videos, you're still going to waste a few dummy rounds and brass in the process. A lot of this stuff is by feel, like over cam. I switched from neck sizing to FL shoulder bumping .002-.003 and getting it right is a pain in the ass. I like FL sizing much better, it's smoother and more reliable and my groups are the same.

Interesting. that Redding Press does not have the play as in lateral side to side play between the threads of the die plate and the die itself, How wonderful. I'll consider one of those presses to replace my aged Lyman press. I have always used a sized case to set up a new sizing or seating die to the press before locking it in place just to insure the die is centered to the case as it is held by the shell holder on the ram.

very good quick setup for sizing brass to SAMI spec.. if you reload, specifically for accuracy in precision rifles you are going to want to size your brass for the chamber in your gun. that means finding the max headspace dims and backing the die 0.002" off the max headspace length. this will most likely mean your die does not touch the shell holder when installing the die in the press..
@CHIBA280CRV

Hold on is it just me or did you call the die’s correctly and then used the wrong one first ? It appears the the sizing die was on the right side as you called it and then when you went to install the first die you grab the one on the left which you first called sitting die but named it sizing die when installing it ? 🤔 hmmm maybe it was just me ? Thanks

I saw that as well. It was confusing. He could have shown the sizing die in his hand before he screwed it into the press. But worse, he only looked at the resized case and pronounced iit Good. No measurement? Didn't even check to see if it would chamber in his rifle? not good.

I currently set my dies up the same way- which is the correct way; no issue there. I have noticed some of my rounds come out a touch longer or a touch shorter and not all exactly uniform. Is this because my brass is not exactly uniform, the bullet is not exactly uniform, or combination of the two?
@Gunwerks

Dennis Garcia, how many firings on your brass? If work hardened from repeated firing and resizing, you may be getting some "springback" in your brass. Annealing would be the likely solution.

Gunwerks in this specific case (this last weekend) I was teaching what I know to a new reloader. To the best of my knowledge from what I was told it was all once fired Hornady TAP factory ammo. Maybe our lube inconsistency was not helping things? (Some cases getting forced a little while others went easier because they had adequate lube and the friction led to stretching ?

Dennis Garcia, possible. Tough to know for sure without being there. Eliminating variables one at a time helps, but there can be a lot of variables in reloading.

An easy way is to put a bullet in an empty case backwards and SLOWLY chamber it. Its not perfect but it works. THat will give you the length to the largest diameter of the bullet.. Then back off the length to whatever "jump" you wish. Worked for me until i bought the RCBS precision mic.

Help, i am reloading Remington 7MM Mag using a 2 die competition set and i have done some measurements on where my bullet touches the lands and found that i am at 2.531" and a good factory round is 2.654" to the ogive. Thus saying i am not able to seat the bullet beyond 2.587" so that i can ladder test the bullet jump off the lands to find the best bullet seating depth for precise accuracy. This is far as my die with the micrometer will allow me (2.587")At this measurement i am really close.
