I built a similar topper for my 1500. YES!!! I am also amazed at how it effects the mileage. I have actually ran out of gas on a trip I am familiar with because of the penalty. My topper is almost exactly the same design, just sloping in sides toward the top. Oh, one other thing I noticed was a buffering that almost seemed like something pushing down on the roof! Strange. Good luck with the fix I will be watching! Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad I found your videos after your changes. I've been trying to come up with something simple for just me to go camping. I can't set up our 33 footer by myself. I want to camp going to visit my daughter's family. This is a great idea. Much simpler than most others I've looked at.

That is really cool that your actually draw your plans with pen and paper instead of using a computer program.

Thanks. Was definitely quicker for me, especially just trying to get an idea of how it would fit/look.

Hey Jack. Great job. Nice light weight solution. I also have a Ford Ranger and have been wracking my brain about how to make an affordable/lightweight camper . How wide are your wings (plywood pieces) that sit on the bed rails ? Looking forward to your next modification. You gained a subscriber my friend. Cheers

They are 9 5/8" roughly. It looks like I was shooting for either 9.5 or 9.75" but running a skill saw down that length will always have a bit of play.

Not to be a naysayer - but from the perspective of my 2005 Tundra with a 4.7L V8, which gets a solid 16 MPG on the highway without a camper, I'd say that 21 MPG is pretty good. I'm guessing that your topper allows for 60" of vertical space from floor to ceiling.

I hear ya, but when I was getting 26 mpg+ regularly, it hurts me to see it so much lower. I'm barely squeaking out that 21mpg as it is (its often just below that), if I could have 21+ without issues I'd be happy. Mostly though I am curious to see if a design change can make a difference, and if so let all those out there considering a build to keep it in mind.

My 2019 Ram 1500 5.7 4x4 gets 21-22mpgs at 65-70mph on relatively flat hwy. My 2002 F150, only about 15 mpgs.

26 mpg? Geeze, my first gen Tacoma barely gets 19 on the freeway. Maybe 15 in town, and it's a compact size.

With the airfoil you put on the front already and body lines of the truck, to me looks like air should flow easily over camper. You might look into an airfoil on back to defuse wind drag, like nascar uses. It's not called drag but vacuum. Add a boat tail that extends past the back on roof. Also seen adjustable wing that forces air down behind camper to disturb vacuum. Also if the back is narrower then the front helps disturb the vacuum effect. Just a couple of ideas I was gonna incorporate into my foamie truck topper.

I am aware of those mods, and they are all good ideas but maybe not practical for what I'm doing, or aesthetically what I am after. But since I am rebuilding I am considering some shape changes.

Cool ideas, I wonder if itll make much more difference than 1 more mpg maybe. And also may be better to just sell this one or try. Maybe can make a lil money off it even. Seems like itll be tricky to redesign the roof and framing and reseal it all 🤔

I am a scientist by trade and at heart so it's the experimentation that I really enjoy. It shouldn't be too hard to remove the top and put another one on.

you should check out how Kimbo does their camper. I know it's apples and Oranges because they have a cab over bed but I think It might give you some ideas!

Yes. Considerably. I went with the rounded top and cut away the front/sides as discussed in the video and my mpg is back up to 25-26 mpg with it loaded. If you check my channel you will find the finished product and other build aspects, or this link kzitem.info/news/bejne/mZeOrZmfq5ujZaQ
