DIY Cat Enclosure Introduction
This is the introduction video to my Cat Enclosure Tutorial Video Series.
We start off by following the star of the show, Flinch, as he runs through the house, to go outside through his cat flap, and out into the cat enclosure.
There will be around 10 videos in this tutorial, explaining how we put the cat enclosure together, including subjects such as planning, costs, how to deal with corners/gaps, attachments, doors and so on. All of this can be done on a tight budget, and an investment of your own time and effort.
Our local council has made it a requirement that cat owners don't let their cat roam outdoors, either at night, or even in the daytime. It is very hard to contain a cat within your back or front yard, as they keep on jumping over the fence.
Our cat had grown up with a taste of outdoor freedom during the day only, so it was a very difficult adjustment for him to make to not be allowed outside by himself. Making the enclosure allows him to still go outside whenever he wants to.
This is a copy of the info from the council website:
"Adequate fencing or an enclosure must be provided to confine your cat to your property at all times, or to be able to demonstrate to a Council Officer how the cat is confined in the absence of enclosure or appropriate fencing"
We looked into various enclosure options on the internet, such as the following:
www.catnip.com.au/
www.happycatenclosures.com.au/
www.secureakat.com.au/
www.catnets.com.au/
We found that the prices of the commercial cat enclosures were way beyond our budget, so I decided to build a DIY Cat Enclosure, but on a budget.
It is mainly made from chicken wire, 20mm electrical conduit, and recycled fence palings for the door.
All up the material costs were below $150 a few years ago.
In a future video, I will go through the costs and the making of this DIY cat enclosure in detail. I'll show you what parts you will need to get, where to buy them if you live in Australia, and how to put it all together.
I'll also show you some of the tricks we came up with that helped us to put the cat enclosure together, and improve it along the way.
I hope you find these tutorials of our Cheap and Low Budget DIY Cat Enclosure useful, and please let me know if you want to see the tutorials in a comment below.
Just on a side note, our cat is a Maine Coon. We have a dog harness which we use to take him outside regularly as well, to give him some extra freedom outside. If you want to see this in action, I'm thinking of posting a video tutorial about that as well.
