Hey girl! I work for Anthropologie and I’ve actually had to make a mobile display before - the biggest advice I can give is to build it from the bottom up not the top down! Building it from the bottom up means that anything you add on top doesn’t affect the weight distribution of what’s below! It’s like magic haha

This a basically both a 30 minute commercial for cricut and an ethics course on what not to do to your « fellow » artists, which is disappointing because she is such a good artist and craftsperson in her own right. And appears to be an all-around kind person.

It was weird when she was describing the piece because she missed that it's an obvious riff on Little Red Riding Hood. Changing the cloak to purple removed that symbolism and takes away from the implied story in original artist's work.

Hello! My wife sent me this video, and as a physics teacher I can offer some tips for anyone trying it. Someone else said it, but go from the bottom up. Also a simple calculation can be used to do it perfectly. Weight x distance_left=weight x distance_right. So make one level, weight it, and multiply it by the distance from the point it will be hung. That tells you either how much weight and length you need on the other side. Or, if you don't want to do math, you can just move the point where each level is hung to the side until it balances. So likely she did not need to add pieces, just move the pivot points on each level. The concept is called rotational statics on like...Kahn academy if you're interested. Good luck!

I’m a little uncomfortable with this video, especially the papercraft project. It’s one thing to take inspiration from big companies like Anthropologie for your creations, but this felt a little too close to ripping off the original ideas of an independent artist and making a monetized video off it. I know you credited the person whose art you originally pinned, but that still means you’ve just made $ off of her art…and she has nothing.

I have an out there idea for you. The storage in your studio that is just going to have a door and walls would be great for you to have electricity in it then you can put lights like brighter fairy lights etc through some holes and have a mural on the outside ... Like fairy lights in grass with a ship on water that is lit or maybe a Batman light signal lit it could be a DIY signal etc I hope you fallow me here. You could just spackle the holes and repaint if you want it back to normal or make skins of different scenes for like holidays and the holes would be covered by each different scene. Crazy idea but you have the perfect situation for it. Love your stuff.

I've always adored Alexander Caldor mobiles (and stabiles) and wanted to make some myself. As a kid, making a mobile in school in art class was my favorite. The way we did the balancing was using thread to hang items from -- thread wrapped around the dowels, and you slide the wrapped thread slightly along the dowel to shift the balance. Much harder to do the balancing with your chains and little screw eyes but so beautiful! Loved your mobile so much!

I love that you didn’t do a stock standard cricut video! I love my cricut and it can do so much more than most people show! I would suggest maybe next time for the metal that you do the shape as an engraving too, so the engraving gives you your outline to cut and you can easily centre the design in the centre of the shape. Awesome video as always ❤❤❤

Hey - as an avid Cricut user who does paper craft artwork like this, I have a tip for you. You don't have to hide the layers of different colours to make your cuts! As long as the shapes you want the same colour have the same colour in the design space, Cricut will automatically sort them and prompt you to load each colour as it cuts. It will save you some time going back and forth.

@@DIYDanie another hot tip - instead of cutting and wasting all that vinyl for the metal shapes, you can use your Cricut to draw the shapes directly on the metal, and attach the etchings to the drawings in the design space...so the Cricut will draw them on the metal, then immediately etch after so you don't have any issues with misalignment.

Danie, look into the works of Alexander Calder. He is the artist who invented mobiles (kinetic sculptures) back in the early 1900s. All mobiles are by definition kinetic. They are MOBILE, meant to move, swing, and play with balance and physics. Catherine's works are heavily influenced by Calder. These "adult mobiles" are more of a return to form for the art.

Both projects are amazing! I made a mobile a long time ago but with paper mâché and paints, I was inspired by Niki de Saint Phalle and I don’t know how I did it but I didn’t end up having balance issues, I cannot tell you how, it just happened that way, I probably was very lucky. I admire your efforts, this stencil cutting machine makes me very nervous, I’m the kind to spend a day cutting shapes 🤣, I like putting my hands in the materials and doing it organically. But obviously you master the tool and it seems so much more simple.

I'm quite the opposite: I do not like gold tones :D I love copper and silver though. The problem I would have with that mobile (besides the sheer size that would not fit my 7 foot ceilings :D) that I really hate rough edges like in not quite clean and plain, and in cutting metal by hand that comes with the territory. A little tip for future projects of that kind: keep the hangings movable until after you balanced the individual parts. Childhood experience ^^ But I am quite a fan of that kind of paper art. Bit to many layer for my taste - I'm quite a simple gal ^^ when it come so optical features - but overall I liked it so much, plus the black frame and background made it so much deeper :)

Agreed make the mobile from the bottom up, also the way to find where to put your central piece to hang it from above, put each end of the dowel on your index fingers (like finger guns) and move them towards each other. As the weights either side try to make it fall, it will make your fingers move unevenly until you reach its centre of gravity, which is not always the centre of the pole

You are not " being inspired by " the artist you are steeling and monatising it and encouraging others to do so. You need more respect for artists who spend years developing their abilities even when those abilities may not be readily discernible in their finished page . Artists and their often difficult lives that form their work maybe inspiring but should never be considered a resource for your engrandizement.

So, I'm just gonna throw this idea out there, but you can use the engraving tool to mark your lines for the cut out, while engraving the design. So you're putting the whole metal sheet in the cricut, it etches the design and the circle that you need to cut out. Making it more likely to get the design where you want it on the moon.
