That's a thoughtful review. If you have access to an inductive ammeter, it would be interesting to see the actual amp draw. As the steel in the weld warms up, resistance increases, so you should see a brief spike in current and then a much lower downward sloping sag in current. Ohm's law shows that a tiny increase in resistance causes a dramatic drop in current when you're dealing with a low resistance circuit like this one. I bought a similar slide hammer a few years ago, but there were no directions or included switch/relay, so I was left wondering how it worked. You've proven how to set it up. I wondered if I could use my welder with a relay to do this, but I like what you've done with two batteries.

Can now confirm (lol) that this ^ works mint, mainly as I binned the welder as a power source (I tried..) & changed to car battery (singular but beefy). Works like a champ. Things I lurnt - you need seriously beefy copper cable going from the + terminal to the starter solonoid (lighter stuff will melt very rapido). You also need a very chunky earth cable or the earth clamp will heat up instead of your tip.. I also learnt you can make this using just 1 battery & it still works fine. That also simplifies the wiring greatly. Another "hack" is don't bother welding a lug onto the "tip" to carry the wire - crimp a lug onto your cable & put the lug onto the bolt you're using as a tip - snug it home with a nut - saves some mucking about, easier, blah blah. Overall, greatly pleased with how this works & it's a brilliant addition to the workshop - so much thanks to Iain for the design. Nice one. :-)

@@iainportalupi I think your design can easily be upgraded to make a full-on spot welder without much hassle - just convert the earth clamp into a negative-connected welding tip with a simple isolated clamping arrangement - bang, you have a cheap as chips spot welder for bodywork. It generates so much heat there is no way on earth it wouldn't work. That's the "Next" hack. :-) Your initial design was genius - I'm just gonna see how far it can be stretched.

FYI, the solenoid type used in this video is also used in snow plow setups. I run 2 VERY large batteries wired in parallel in my truck because of the plow, lights, salt spreader etc. Whenever I hit the up and left or right button to move the plow, the initial surge is over 2000 amps for a brief moment when the pump motor first starts. Any solenoid (relay)from a snow plow and starter relay made for an older car, truck or tractor with a large engine should be fine as both DC plow pump motors and DC starter motors are similar. They both use a massive amount of current. Please be very careful because while voltage shocks, amperage or current kills. Do NOT think that because it is only 12VDC (volts direct current) it is harmless! Use your head and don't stand in a water puddle or allow the bare + and - cable ends to complete a circuit your moist body is a part of. The old saying "More power to ya!" means something in this case! Pun intended Lol.

In plain simple ways it's time efficient to do the use of 2 tools in one , what you need is a spot welder dresser, it's a tool for specifically for reshaping copper tips for welding ,just change from battery to a transformer, dead shorting batteries creates explosive gases ,and your creating a spark when welding ,yeah it happens to make the battery explode with acid everywhere. Don't think your in the open is good enough ,look at the times people jumped cars and took the wrong lead off ,even though it's in open air it still exploded

Dude, it's an awesome idea and one that works great! Congrats! But there is no way on earth that you can draw from those regular, normal car batteries 1200 A. I have a Fiat pickup truck with an 2500 cc engine and it has a 100 A battery and is huge. Maybe as large and long as your 2 batteries against each other. Your system is maybe 120 A, not 1200! Any comments? (I really want to build one too!)
@iainportalupi
6 жыл бұрын
McJay's In fact I can draw 1200a from these batteries. One can supply 650 cold cranking amps and the other can supply 550 cold cranking amps. Vehicle starting batteries are commonly in the 550cca and up category. There is a difference between cold cranking amps and amp hours and it sounds to me like your big battery is in the 100amp hour range which is a different measurement all together. Cold cranking amps are how much current a battery can source for a brief time while amp hours is how much energy is stored in the battery.
@spanishlyrics5720

You are confusing the Ampers per hour with Crank Amperes that a battery is capable of for a few seconds. You can have a 70 amperes per hour battery with 800 crank amperes. Just check the label of your battery and you'll see.

Iain Portalupi thanks a lot. One more question : the current will flow from the tip of slide hammer to the magnetic ground. If the magnetic ground is bad how do you prevent the current to flow from the tip of hammer to your hand and through your body to ground?
@pkuudsk9927
6 жыл бұрын
I can explain that question . IT WORKS JUST LIKE A SPOT WELDER OF ANY TYPE /BRAND . SO .Unless you are standing in water, or on the same metal you are welding on, or bare foot you should be fine . Electricity will always find the path of least resistance. Rubber gloves and boots would be the best place to start to prevent you from any current flow to your body from happening. At no point in time should you touch either surface of the metal, making a contact point to your body AND INTERRUPTING THE FLOW OF CURRENT while using the tool, once the button is depressed. Meaning if you are the path of least resistance to any ground / earth source IT CAN KILL YOU. From current flow to your body . Otherwise it will always go back to the negative or positive of the source it came from. 80 mA ( 80 MILLIAMPS) CAN/WILL KILL YOU , stop your heart . So it would be advised that you always have a good ground clamp or magnetic bond to bare metal contact. He clearly shows clean bare metal as the ground point for the tool. Both the magnetic clamp or any clamp, and the tool now become the ground point of electrical current flow,, in this tool, so both must be clean and attached very well . This is both for a good attachment,so you can pull the dent and safety reasons. With over 500000 MILLIAMPS in this tool. This is a tool NOT to be used unless you completely understand how it works. ALSO ANY WELDING SHOULD BE USED WITH EYE SAFETY BOTH UV AND IMPACT CONSIDERATIONS. Disclaimer: if you do not understand ANY OF this I suggest you study electrical principals first before attempting this , any information I have given you is for demonstration purpose only,any and all risk of using this information is at your own risk.

777 Smitty it’s nothing but an ordinary grade 3 bolt. My guess is that the tip of the nail/screw is too pointy so it isn’t letting enough current flow through it to weld. Jack Lamata I believe you’re getting amp hours and cold cranking amps mixed up. Cold cranking amps it the max current the battery will dump into a short circuit for a brief period of time (15 second bursts). Starting batteries are rated in cold cranking amps because the starter looks like a short circuit when it first starts turning. The amp hour rating of one of these starting batteries is only in the 40 amp hour range while its cold cranking amp rating is 600 amps.

Venture Electronics nope, disconnecting the battery is a myth. This is no different than running the starter in the truck. The circuit for the welding current is from the tip of the welder to the ground magnet. It doesn’t care about the truck’s computer and the computer doesn’t care about it. In fact the vehicle’s battery acts as a giant 12v regulator so if the welding current was to mess with the truck’s computer as the myth states disconnecting the battery would certainly lead to computer failure because the voltage could then rise up to above 16v and fry stuff. But it can’t because the two circuits are separate from one another.
