You explained this really well. I was working on a new neck from a kit and listening at the same time. I had a mental image of what you were saying, I looked up and at 17:00, there was nothing on your bench, but I knew right where you were at. Know what I'm saying? You describe the procedure very- in depth. Thanks for posting this. Lots of great information.

Your illustration is right on! You have to leave a little “meat” on the frets. If you don’t your frets will not be flat anymore. It is common sense, and as long as that “meat” that is left on the frets is dead center of the fret, assuming that the person that put the frets in put them at the correct distance of the scale, then you can achieve perfect intonation. Very good vid if nothing else this piece of info is worth the watch...
@RandySchartiger

you are absolutely right, the closer you can get it the better intonation will be! with plek machines these days they can be spot on! unlike the old days when we used the old rule of 18 to determine where each fret went, which was later narrowed to the rule of 17.817 for more precision. thanks for checking out my videos!

glad i found your youtube site. haven't played in 30+ yrs and can not remember anything. when i started pulling on the strings found out the bridge was plastic and the high E was cutting into it. i looked around and googled. found i have a high 12fret but not bowed. guitar is wallmart folk adam levine. light and seems to have a pretty good sound for as cheap as it was. i've been playing it for over a yr. went thru 2 sets of strings just playing blues riffs. tools are pretty cheap if you look on ebay and can wait a few weeks. wonder how i ever got by in the past. i was in 2 or 3 bands back then but we never had problems once tuned. got the calluses but no strength in the little finger or the stretch.... lol thank you for sharing. i would rather fix it myself and learn than take it to someone. oh, also got the fender clone spectrum from target. amps a mess (archer 10amp i think) guess im used to the marshall i had but the clone seems not to bad out of set up. so i need to learn all that and the quarter trick. need a delay and pedal. but whoa the bends i can make... way easier than back then... bends are going way up to where im going its gonna bust and so easy too i don't need 3 fingers to pull it off

I stopped playing too for over 25 years, didn't play or work on instruments and I can relate the the bends and stretches being harder, now I have focal dystonia on top of that, really makes it hard for me some days, but I still like to mess around and try. thanks for watching and commenting!

Not only is the Crimson's fret file less expensive - it's a much better made product. Ben Crowe (the owner there) made me one in return for a donation for his kickstarter campaign to get new shop gear. They get something like $35-45 for them and I donated $35 to the kickstarter - told him I wanted a fret file not the wooden picks and teeshirt they were offering. Anyway he agreed to the deal - When I received it I was blown away at what a beautifully made tool it was - too nice to use in a way. I'm not shilling for Crimson - just like it when you get more than you expected - kind of cool today when most transactions are the opposite.

+Tioga Fretworks I agree is it's very cool! I got the picks and shirt and wish ever since I had tried to get their nut slot files, all in one and cheaper than StewMac charges for one file of one gauge! I get a lot of feedback for jacking Stewmac but their tools are ridiculously high when compared to others just as good and better. Thanks for your comment and for watching.

How do you level the fret board with that straight edge? I see every other luthier use a notched level first, then test the frets with a standard straight edge or fret rocker.
@kenoakee

Kenneth Surgent precisely what I was thinking.
@butteredbiskit3497
4 жыл бұрын
You can only check the straightness of the wood with the notched ones. They're using the notched one to put the neck straight using the truss rod. Your neck should have about 0.010" inch relief. You want to straighten that out before a fret job. After all that, then the straight edge with no notches comes in. Randy didnt clarify that. Otherwise, he's dead on.

Thanks Randy for sharing this, I just got a used Jackson guitar, and some of the frets have little dings in them, I figured I would do the frets before cleaning up the guitar, this thing is guitar is Filthy. I don't know why people don't take care of their instruments.

Randy couldn't you save a step by just starting your leveling with the arched (radius) sander? I don't see the point of leveling with a straight edge first and then sanding again with the radius shaped sander. Especially if you're trying to save as much fret material as possible.
@RandySchartiger
7 жыл бұрын
You make a great point! I guess one could start with a radius block instead of leveling all the frets, accept you might run into trouble in instances where only the first 5 frets have large dents in them and all the rest are ok. In an example like this using a straight edge and a lot of care you can level those first 5 frets in uniform with the others without removing much material at all from the others and then put the radius back in all of them together. Another example that could be a problem are guitars with a compound radius. I guess it would depend a lot on the instrument and how the frets are worn but yes in most cases you could just start with the radius block.
@kenoakee
5 жыл бұрын
Christopher Robinhood I would agree with this thought. Why would you want to level the frets when they already should have the correct "Radius" . I don't think I like the idea of filing down the first 5 frets and then re-crowning them ether. Seems to me that your first five frets would not be as high as the subsequent frets. IMHO This could possibly cause the strings to buzz against the "higher" frets when lower notes are fretted like cowboy chords for example. This being said I am only a recently aspiring "Luthier" so take that for what it's worth.🤓

Don't MUMMIFY your neck! Classic. There also must be a lot of (SM) male customers walking about (in circles most likely...) with half their landing gear down and seeing in monovision, though how they play guitar with only one arm is somewhat of a mystery. 10/4 But seriously folks, Randy does it for me... And nice of him to laterally plug our home-based Crimson Guitars too. 10/4 Subscribing and big thumbs up.

10/4 Randy - You are of course MOST WELCOME. I like your off-pat, humour too (not unlike the Brit humour :-D ) I am currently doing two necks, but I'm a bit short on proper toolage. But that just means employing more elbow grease. :p Ben at Crimson knows his stuff and is often a scream to watch...lol. But sometimes he does tend to 'ramble on' and tangent off....lol. But again, that is quite endearing. And Crimson make some stunning guitars. So currently you join 'Guitarologist' (who is pretty good at amps...) and Crimson as my 'go to' for guitar repairs and renovations on YT. Keep up the great work Randy ;-)
