@tortagialla

For that specific cover, I only sewed in one signature of 8-10 papers folded because I was bulking up the pages a lot with decorations and elements. But for regular journaling I usually put up to three signatures in a binding of that height - 6-8 papers folder per signature. It might actually help to fold your papers first so you can see how much height is needed for your paper - then measure it out and make your cover. Hope that helps!

I know this comment is older, but for anyone else struggling here, a sharp kitchen knife (on a safe surface) and a metal ruler can do it. I was using my lil pocket knife I use at work for cutting boxes, and a straight edge to trim things before I could get an x-acto blade. They were a "little" crooked but better than trying to cut straight by hand with my big scissors lol

I am curious af, but I have a few questions, what do you usually use for the hard thing, and what would be the best glue for that
@tortagialla
5 жыл бұрын
For the hard cover, I'm using the very compressed hardboard that you often find as the backing of watercolor or art paper blocks. I believe you can also buy it separately, sometimes called Millboard or Binder's Board. The idea is that it's a very sturdy material that won't bend easier. You can also use regular cardboard, but you'll notice depending on what type you have, the strength is different (some are so flimsy and bend easily, others are stronger) To glue the board it's just regular white glue, also called PVA glue. It's liquid, because it can penetrate the materials you use and when dried, bind it all together nicely! Hope that helps!

I actually just recycle the back of legal pads or art paper pads - it's like stiff hardboard. If you can bend it easily and it creases, probably not strong enough for a cover. You can also buy the real bookmaking board at art shops!

That's not the best way to fold the corners... too much bulk and gap. You cut the corners off at a 45° angle, leaving about an 1/8th" at the point. That 1/8th gets rolled up and smoothed in to the point. Then the sides fold up and meet next to one another.
@tortagialla
2 жыл бұрын
You are right that it does bulk up the corners! I'm not very precise, so I don't like cutting the corners, because sometimes over wear and tear the corners become exposed easily. I would rather have the bulk - or you can consider using metal book corners. Thanks for the input!

what glue are you using? do you have a template? love the video
@tortagialla
6 жыл бұрын
Hiya! I'm using regular white glue - it's called vinavil in Italy! I suspect any type of liquid glue will do well, since you can spread it to cover all spots and it will dry up to hold everything together. (As long as you don't plan to dunk your book into a swimming pool - LOL) So I don't usually use templates because I'm horrible at measuring and being exact... a weakness! I start by deciding the size of my book. Then cut the front cover and back cover to be that size. Then the spine is just the same height but as wide as I want my book to be. Then I lay all those pieces on my cover material, such as leather or cloth. (Front cover on left, spine piece in middle and back cover on the right) In terms of the little space you see between each piece, just make sure it's about the thickness of whatever hardboard/cardboard you are using. Because that gives your cover room to bend and be flexible. Hope that makes sense!
