Where do you want the sides of the window studs to line up? Lined up with the edge of the window? Slightly to the side? Or just don't cover up the window but get it close? Hope that makes sense.

Great question. You'll need to take into consideration your sheetrock thickness you'll use. I used 1/2 in thick drywall and I prefer the look of still being able to see the frame of the window. So I had the wood about a 1/4 inch away from the window that way when I laid my 1/2 drywall down and mudded and painted, I had an overlap but about 1/4 to 3/8 inch of the window frame still showing.

Can you use the same theory for doorways?

Sorry I had a reply here but was balancing 2 different videos. I thought this comment was on my how to add molding to a window for the framed out look. Doorways are a bit different. Its actually easier and safer to have your jack studs and king studs measured out appropriately because you also need your header above on door ways. I personally wouldnt go about doing this method for doors because there are standards for doors that are made and having a, cut as you go method will give you imperfect results on how the door and door jamb fit into the space. @heidijohnson2844

Why did you mark under the level @1:21? Isn't it supposed to be above?

Good question. So I'm using the bottom edge of my level as my straight edge at 1:21. You'll see that the bottom left corner of my level is touching the top right corner of the window. So I make a mark on the bottom so when I install the 2x4 to frame out the window, I know that the inside face of the 2x4 I install should touch that mark. Essentially I'm making the 2x4 face that frames out the window, to be perfectly positioned so when I install 1/2" thick sheetrock, it overlaps a smaller portion of the window and looks more complete & professional. Imagine a picture you want to frame, you don't want that frame to overlap too much of the picture, but you need to account for the thickness of the frame. That help any?
