It seems I was right. I also wanted to make a portable soldering gun using a ZVS driver but I don't have a thick enough wire for the secondary. I will try to get around it because it's been on my mind since a few years ago. Watch my video where I made 18650 powered soldering iron using a Metcal tip. Cheers :)

I finally managed to make a soldering gun using a ZVS driver and 2x18650 cells and it kept blowing up fuses and transistors, the tip wire thickness is very important because it causes the oscillations to stop at least in my case. To get around this problem, I made a large inductance choke (L1) to limit the current and now the transistors won't blow. It starts to squeal as the tip gets very hot. What I hate about it is that when the tip is cold, it draws about 3A but after the tip heats up the frequency decreases from 50Khz to about 8Khz and it draws about 7A which quickly overheats the tip so you have to know when to let go of the trigger and let it cool down.

i mucked around with a few ZVS drivers, pushed one to 4mhz driving a tesla coil, really nasty hot arcs that melted secondaries, even at 0.5mm thick.. so, induction heating was my real intention. found that with a empty coil, dropping in a chunk of steel caused fets to not just fail ,but EXPLODE. instantly. starting it up with the load wasnt so bad... but very delicate, very prone to releasing brown smoke... anyway. its about "Q". the resistance, the load, and how the reflections interact with the supply. you can run any combination of capacitor and inductor that will give a desired frequency, but a high Q will be very peaky, but also prone to stop oscillating when loaded as the peak alters, whereas too low a q and it may just not oscillate at all. two opposed equations... 1/2LI^2, 1/2CV^2. half of the total energy is stored in the capacitor as voltage squared, half in the inductor as current squared. current squared across a resistance gives heat... for a given load or resistance on the output, theres a certain ratio of capacitance to inductance that allows for the maximum power transfer. too much load, too little resistance, too much energy is transferred and the circuit may stop oscillating. the magnetic fields are damped by their own BEMF. its lenz law. a spring cant bounce when its damped... an oscillator cant oscillate when you suck too much power out of it. the currents you produce in your secondary, whether its a single turn of wire, a lump of steel, or 20,000 turns... will produce their own magnetic fields that oppose the applied magnetic field and the current that produced it. when shorted. when "loaded". less resistance=more load. higher frequencies at the same voltage are higher current.. in the tank. dont think of current as flow but the rate of change. a 20v peak to peak sine wave at 20khz has far less rate of change, far less current, than a 200v peak to peak at 20khz. the current in the tank circuit is what counts. the ratio of input power to absorbed energy in the workpiece though... thats the efficiency. its a headtrip. i am not a fan of the ZVS anymore, im a half bridge resonant LLC convert...

that is N channel Mosfet transistor , set your meter to measure ohms connect positive or red probe to d lead and negative probe to S lead (leg) of the transistor it will show high resistance touch the gate or G lead with your finger it should change resistance if it did change it is Ok to consider it good transistor. if all of same type of Mosfets are not checking good in this method of testing it is sometimes for having protected gate and the method of testing is different for this type and it should be checked dynamically with voltage applied .
