I have orange Medaka in a ceramic fish bowl on my patio. I have lots of duckweed to shade them from the hot FLORIDA sun. My bowl holds about 8 gallons and sits on a heavy duty rolling platform so I can put them in the shade. I found some tiny tadpoles in another pot and brought them inside to a small water terarrium. I took some water from my Medaka bowl to add to my tadpoles and found two Medaka fry!!! I’m so thrilled. Time to set up another Medaka bowl. Your suggestions about a nursery for the fry and shade are very helpful. Thank you for a very informative post.

Wow I'd love to see your patio ponds❤️ I can see how exciting to see the media fry! What I learnt from looking after the little fry, when they are younger than 2 weeks old, they normaly can't eat fish food even if you grind it to powder. In Japan, people feed plant planktons (Paramecium) to medals fry, but I couldn't find anyone sells them here. I tried to catch and grow them by myself but I failed. So I decided to keep the very young baby fish in green water in a bucket (water colour should be just light yellow green that I can still see the bottom of the bucket). Green water contains nutrition like planktons or bacteria so medals fry can feed themselves. After two weeks, they start being able to eat powder food. I found it's easier to look after little fish if I separate them from adult fish, and put the fry in a relatively large container like a bucket (my one is 15L size). I made green water by putting about 5 adult medals fish for 4-5 days in a bucket water, and move them back to the pond (time depends on the weather, size of fish, size of the bucket )In that way, the bucket water turned green. I didn't look after the fry, but they all survived in the green water! Now it's getting cold here, so they are slowing down the growth but they look happy. Good luck with your lovely ricefish and tadpoles 💕

@@liryc24 I understand, the cover doesn't look good. As my pond plants grow, they give the fish more hiding areas. I think that helped to protect them too. If your pond doesn't have much hiding area, and the colour of the fish stands out, you'd better have a cover because the cover also protect fish from birds as well (depends on where you live though).

Wow! It sounds like a beautiful idea! If you are planning to put ricefish in that pond, I think it’s better to adjust the water to fall gently not to have too much stream in the pond. If there is some area where fish can avoid the current, it’s ok 👍 Also solar powered pump probably stops working during the night and can give a fish quiet sleep time😊

The Japanese garden is amazing and the mini fish pond is perfect. Just wondering since the pond is in outdoor, could the rice fish survive during winter? Do you need to change water regularly?
@livelovelaughdiy
11 ай бұрын
Hi 😊 thank you for your comment & questions. Japanese rice fish can handle very cold water. I live in Gold Coast in Australia where the water never freezes even in the coldest day. So they are just fine. I don't know how the climate is like in winter in your area, but they can survive cold water under a thin layer of ice. Actually I've just uploaded a video about winter pond, you can check this video for the details 😉 kzitem.info/news/bejne/wJ6qwJWhgYWniG0 Regarding the water change, I used to change water once/ 2-3 weeks to keep it clean from algae in summer with this mini pond (you don't need any water change in winter), but I upgraded it to a bigger patio pond with more plants and substrate last year and I changed water only once a year! My fish are happy and they reproduced a lot! The natural ecosystem must have worked well in the bigger patio pond. I have the video about my new pond if you like to know how I look after my fish. kzitem.info/news/bejne/joyruXyFg5eLoZg

Also when it’s cold, they spend most of the time sitting at the bottom and don’t move much. So if your pond is deep, you may not be able to see them much. A lot of people start setting this kind of pond from spring in Japan. I think spring is the easiest season 😉

Hello Friend! I'm from Brazil and I really liked your planted mini pond. It was wonderful, because you are very talented and creative. I am also setting up a mini planted pond of approximately 1300 liters, here in Brazil, where I will put some fish. I will follow you and I subscribed to your channel. Cheers and bring us more movies, ok?!

Hello What a beautiful pond you've created! Could you please tell me what the creeper plant on the outside of the pond is? The one that is growing up the side and along the path. Many thanks.
@livelovelaughdiy
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. The creeper plant is Callisia Repens (Creeping Inchplant). It grows very very well here. It's a type of succulent and great ground cover. There are some variations in colour. Some are pink, some are purple, or gold. My one is goldish green but backside of the leaves are purple.

Liked your idea!!! But how often do you clean your pond?? Can you make a video on how to maintain!!

I cleaned this mini pond once/2-3 wk when it’s warm, but now it’s winter here and my fish are often sleeping at the bottom and don’t eat much so I seldom need to clean the pond 😅

fun fact: People in Japan don't really aquascape their ponds. It's too cold for the aqua plants to thrive in the winter.

Yes, it snows in winter in Japan and I guess many aqua plants struggle to survive 🥶

Should we change water regularly to prevent algae from growing? Great video 👍👍
@livelovelaughdiy

I cleaned the pond and changed water regularly, but the frequency depends on the season. If it’s summer, I change water more often than cold season. You seldom need to change water in winter. I received a comment from Japan on this video. She said that if I can place akadama soil in the pond, I don’t need to change water. Actually I looked for it, but couldn’t find it here. I don’t know where you live, but if you can find it, it may help to reduce your work.

So glad I found you. I’m on central coast NSW. I’ve been wanting a rice fish pond like this for ages but have been unsuccessful in finding rice fish in Australia. Would you mind giving me the name of where you got them? Love your garden, it’s so tranquil ❤️🇦🇺

I got my rice fish from a guy I found on Gumtree. I went to his house and bought them directly from the guy. You may be able to find rice fish on Gumtree. But I know it's almost impossible to find pet shops that sell rice fish in Australia. I tried to search them but couldn't find any or sold out. Good luck 👍 and thank you 💕

Thanks! May i ask what happens when it comes to cold winter? Do you need a heater while putting the pot outdoor?
@livelovelaughdiy
Жыл бұрын
I moved my ricefish to a fish tank inside last winter. But Japanese ricefish are tolerant with cold water. They can survive during the winter. They usually slow down eating when the water temperature drops. When it’s very cold, they don’t eat, don’t move much to save energy. They can survive even under ice but if it’s too cold and the whole water gets frozen, they die. Also, little fish are weaker, so they may not handle well with cold water. So we don’t normally use heater for this fish. Hope this info is helpful 😊
