Lol same. I was studying for an exam and I'd often lay on the couch or floor face down reading. The dog would sit on the book all of the time.

Great videos. I like the design of the Kitchen Island. I am concerned about how the solid oak top and the solid table top edge trim were mounted. You may have some problem with seasonal wood movement across the width of the top as the humidity in the Spring and Summer increases. You may see the short aprons pull apart from the legs and the miter joints on the solid edging open up. I don't want to be critical, but this could be a problem. Thank you for all of your great content.

@@lauralaforge558 Woodworking has been my hobby for several years. A lesson most woodworkers learn the hard way is "wood movement". Solid wood will expand across the width (perpendicular to the grain direction) with changes in humidity. A full size table top will move about a 1/4 in. in width, as an example. The most common solution is to attach the table top to the frame with elongated holes so the screw can move while still holding the top down. Check out this video from Jon Peter's channel. He uses another common solution to attaching a table top, at the 15 min. mark: kzitem.info/news/bejne/zqib2Zxpgptqkn4.

@@bmurphy847 thank you for your time! I have heard that wood expands and contracts, but as a newbie it's hard to know how that should impact designs of whatever I am building. I'll watch his video; I'm sure experience and trial and error will be good instructors as well. Most of my projects in essence have been shop projects or other things that I make, disassemble, and reuse the wood. I'm hoping to use my now very substantial collection of tools to start making actual finished furniture and built-ins to keep.

@@bmurphy847 I'm planning on making the kitchen cart from this old house with (2) base cabinets I'm going to order from the people who are doing our cabinets (we're in the middle of a kitchen reno). Hoping that if I follow their plan exactly aside from things other than joinery, I won't have to worry about the expanding and contracting.

Thanks for this video, you built a wonderful island. Nice job framing the new rental unit. Maybe it's just me but the only thing to produce a better video might be to upgrade the lighting in your shop, other than that I totally loved it all. I'm about to subscribe.

I'm so inspired ... I wanted a table like that for my craft room I was going to just buy an island at Ikea. Was curious how much it cost to make? With wood prices so crazy I wonder if it would be cheaper to just buy something.
@conradcoolerfiend

yeah wood prices are nuts. if you can settle for something less than solid wood (painted mdf, laminate etc) its probably cheaper to buy. if your buying a solid wood item, you gotta do the math on the comparison.

It seems like in general the primary benefit of woodworking is customization, not cost savings. Cost savings would only really apply over the long term considering tools etc (and you'd be of course investing your labor). And again you've got to compare apples to apples. Would you ever pay for something made like that from hardwood? I want to make a kitchen island instead of buy bc I am going to have them give me the exact 2 matching base cabinets I want, I'll get to order the exact species and size of butcher block I want, and I can do any sort of customization. Same with built-ins. I want a built in desk because I want something that fits my wall exactly, then places to hide and store (ideally on the wall) my unattractive printers, scanners, cricut, etc. Sewing machine in a bottom drawer. Monitors on a track and I can easily switch from work laptop to home PC. Something to slide across them so there is no visual clutter bc my office is also my bedroom. This will be a great improvement over my current (2) size by size small desks.

I love the table but I’m concern about how you fixed the top to the legs and skirt. This may cause problems with seasonal changes causing the top to split bc there is not movement allowed. Hopefully this wine be and issue but look into wood movement to get a better understanding so you minimize wasting time and money.
