Hey, just to add on this wonderful video, there is a pet brush that you press a button and the teeth retract giving you full access to the dubbing EASILY! It’s only a couple bux more but totally worth the cost saving time and frustration. Homie in vid makes it look easy and all, but there are times it will get frustrating, this helps! (It helped me, hopefully you will see it’s benefit). Have fun tying your flies! Hey, gotta say, that black ice dubbing looks GREAT!!!

You're awesome, I appreciate your insights and techniques! I've spent a grip on laser dub--it's a great product but I'm at a point in my tying to where I have to start making my own or I'm going to break the bank. I figured that this style of dubbing could be made but I didn't know how begin or to which materials to use to get the correct blend and consistency. Onward to creating a killer blend. Thanks so much!!!

Chimo! I mentioned using wool in the video, but Acrylic yarn works just as well and I've been told it is actually what the Laser Dub is made from. Blend on!

I do the same but use acrylic "wool" instead of the real thing as I feel the acrylic sheds water better on large streamers and pike flies.

Gary, thanks for watching. I also use acrylic yarn and sometimes mix it with wool. You're right in that the wool soaks up the water. I did an update video to this one last year using a multicolored yarn cake. You can view here if you are interested kzitem.info/news/bejne/rZ2tp3ygn6CYfKw Cheers!

Hi there! Can I buy acrylic yarn and make my own dubbing!? Found a multi-color pack for like 10 bucks and I get 12 different colors. I'm new to all this and looking to "practice" tying on the cheap and not waste or make mistakes with the expensive stuff from fly shops! Thanks and be well.

Darren will running the blend together through a coffee grinder give you the same effect?
@PiscatorFlies
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kerry, it should be pretty much the same. My only hesitation on the grinder is the length of the fibers. Shorter fibers do great in the grinder but longer ones can get wound on the blades. Same goes for the combs in that they aren't as good for the shorter fibers as they are for longer. Cheers

+Bob Bohner Hi Bob, because it's a craft material it may not be mentioned, but there is a link to the eBay store I've used to purchase my supply. The Violetta pearl is very close to the Hareline UV Pearl ice dubbing. You'll need to cut it a little to get it to the right size. www.ebay.com/itm/Angelina-Crystal-Violetta-Fibers-One-Ounce-29-g-/192314992542?hash=item2cc6dde79e

@PiscatorFlies

Hi Randy, I used wool in this video, but you can use any yarn. I use a lot of acrylic yarn now and have been moving away from wool. This is mainly for wet flies like steelhead streamers and nymphs. I don't tie much for dry flies so I haven't looked too deep into materials for dry dubbing. I would start with Antron perhaps for a dry base, but if you can find something finer that mimics the Fine & Dry dubbing, that is what I would go with. Cheers
