I was so impressed with this that I pretty much copied it and began growing lettuce in my small grow-tent. I began with just twelve grow sites and today purchased all I need to add another twenty-four growing sites to my system. I have grown five kinds of lettuce and a few other things to see what grows best and just love the system! Thank you so much for posting it!

Thank you!! The system works great. Just need to adjust my feed at the top because it’s unbalanced but otherwise works great.

@@BobGrows I am working on that right now too. I may have to add small valves to each individual water feed so the flow can be regulated to each upright and then I'll begin growing again... maybe tomorrow or Monday.

this is SO simple!!! Pre-fab parts. No drilling a 55 Gallon monster bucket. No flush-mounting holders with apoxy. I will look to see if I can make a netpot version I already have "Kratkey" Starters created from old Jars, and, I can move them from those Right into a system like this np I would imagine.

The tall, sliced OLIVE , Jars !!!! ..... The SMALL netpots sit in them perfect !!!! No Mod needed besides ducktape the outside to keep it dark on inside. I also tape the lid, inverted (upside down) to the bottom as a BASE, and it helps stabilize it some. And keeps the lid incase you need it for whatever reason. [HOARDER , Hahahahaha]

would it also work without the stones and than just use a forward angles so the roots would still get water. If that's the cause tomatoes would be possible.

Did you use PVC primer/glue for your fittings? I began down a rabbit talking about how bad it was to use PVC for this purpose in general, but am going for it anyhow. I started building and as I was applying the purple glue, wondered how safe that'd be in the long run.

You'll be fine. You're probably picking up more and you're running water that you drink. Glue your pipes together put it somewhere with a fan blowing the push out the vapors for a few hours. Then run hot water for a few minutes through it then run cold water. Let it sit for a couple of days in the order will go away. You can run alcohol or chlorine or Clorox through with a heavy water vents and I'm sure that will take care of any concerns. There's no standing water in this like a bucket that you're going to drink out of so you'll be fine. Yes your roots will be laying on some of the PVC but it's not like you just planned it right after you glued it.

I am building and aquaponics system with my Science Olympiad team for a maker faire, and have found your video very helpful! I am wondering; Do you leave your pump running all of the time, or does it have an on and off cycle? One more question; I am using a 10 gallon fish tank and want my vertical aquaponics system to have a total height of around 4 feet. What GPH of a pump would you recommend? Thank you for the awesome video! - K

What’s more important is the head pressure rather than how much it flows but something of at least 480 gallons per hour should be fine just make sure it has enough head height for your vertical system

Question, I see clay balls at the top of your vertical system. I am wondering how you feel about that approach and how you keep them from falling through the pipe? I have been feeding thru 1/4 inch tubing and it has been difficult to get it to wash over the roots. Please share your thought on your approach. Thanks.
@BobGrows

They kinda sit on top of rock wool for looks. They aren’t supporting the plant. I did away with the drip tubing because they would clog. Ended up with pvc with a hole drilled in. You want to angle the vertical pipe so the water drips down the front size saturating the rockwool and roots.
@silverfoxes65

@@BobGrows Thanks for the tip. The rockwool serves to disperse the drip making them more random. Tha angle helps to direct the nutrient solution to the roots. I plan to increase my angle. Do you cycle on and off or leave on all the time?

I’m making one now. The Wyes are 3.25 each for 2 inch-the most expensive part. Mine has 15 but I’m going to 30. The PVC is 9.00 for 10 feet. Buy a 24.00 cutter and you can cut yourself. The tees and elbows are 1-3.00 a piece. Pump is 15.00 and tubing is cheap

Hello Bob, very interesting project during a lockdown time like this time. My wife loves fresh herds, I have been struggling to grow on soil. Not very successful and occupy alot of space. I have one question please. How do you make your hydrophonic liquid: what proportion? How often do you chnage or renew your containers. Much appreciated if you could. Thanks.

I'm starting one with "advanced nutrient bloom" they have it on Amazon. What's cool is that it's PH perfect for plants so you don't have to test it all the time. I'm new to this and just wanted to get started asap, and other growers use it.

It amazes me how complicated people make these things. I like your style. I have been growing Kratky in the basement for years. I grow dutch buckets outside in summer with tomatoes. This year, as an experiment, I'm including fava beans, Italian broad beans, and blue lake. I was inspired by Maryland Joe's vertical system like yours, which I made, and with the right plants, I think it will do fine. I have not had great luck with that system under lights, but I was testing the limits with strawberries and spinach under led shop lights. The spinach started great and then bolted. The strawberries also started great but were less than exciting. I think that lettuce is what I will grow in that one. I also use Masterblend, but I mix it dry (I know you aren't supposed to premix but it works for me) and use at the rate of 26 grams per 5 gallons of tap water and get about 700 ppm which seems fine. I don't worry about ph either. I do recommend a ppm meter which are cheap on Amazon. Thanks for the video.
