I am repeatedly failing to understand why KZitemrs have to constantly justify themselves and their content to the naysayer viewers. Majority of which have paid nothing to watch. Do these people have a hotline to the paid for, BBC's duty office to complain about their content... Errrr....doubtful. Your content Tim is insightful, creative and encouraging for folks that might otherwise lack the confidence to undertake such project.. I salute you Sir... (& Madam & children)🙂

I had a big bust up with my dad a few weeks ago, he's a "retired" builder and had been staying with us during lockdown in our first house. I got so frustrated because while i was at work he was doing all of the jobs around the new house that i was excited to learn how to do (bricklaying, pointing, retaining walls, woodwork etc), tricky to express that you are grateful for things being done but you wanted to do them. So i for one totally understand your stance of "i just wanted to do it myself"

Do I think you're mad for taking on the roof on your own in the autumn? Yes of course. Do I understand why? Completely! I'm doing a sympathetic renovation on my Victorian house at the moment (probably only half the size of yours!) and totally get that when you put so much work and thought into the project it becomes a personal achievement and a passion project, also that you want to see what you are capable of achieving. Not to mention getting reliable trades in at the moment is a nightmare! I had a couple of steel beams fitted last week, the work itself was fine but the chaos of things being broken (it's an empty property currently) and my tools going walkies is off putting to say the least!

Totally understand the reason for doing the job yourself Tim, it’s part of the DNA of your brand after all ✅ and the weather held up for you too! Still it’s pretty awesome to have done it. There are always going to be folk with their own ideas - best to follow your own path as you do plenty of things right... Carry on... and if you can, do it yourself 👌

Hi Tim, I'm looking to get my roof recovered or re-roofed this year. I have read online that the average cost of a new roof in the UK is £5-6k. Can you help me understand why you got quotes of £20 and £5-6k was your cheapest? Did your quotes include guttering, soil pipes, new fascias etc too? thanks
@TheRestorationCouple
3 жыл бұрын
It could have been done cheaper with alternative materials but with natural slate and other material we used, materials were over £6k alone. The lowest quote we had was simply labour only to strip the roof and fit new slate. With the experience of doing it myself, I would say that was the most labour intensive but comparatively quicker than everything else I had to do. Having spoken with roofers since, they suggested it would have been well over £20k with all the additional work I carried out, stonework, joinery, etc so I guess it’s all down to spec and size.

Aeschylus, an ancient Greek playwright was killed at the age of 67, when an eagle dropped a tortoise on his head. So - think on. Just imagine how much worse it could have been were the eagle to have dropped cast iron guttering. I think we can all learn from the moral of this story.
