Very good information. Very thorough. One thing with regard to production value is that I noticed that occasionally through the video, it became very difficult to hear and understand the audio due to the wind bursts blowing against the microphone. I don't know whether they make wind screens for microphones, but I wanted you to be aware that the wind did occasionally make it difficult to hear what you were saying. Regardless, though, this was an interesting and thorough video with good information.

I am about a third of the way through this video and I have to wonder how well that will hold up. The plastic seems pretty thin. Add the holes and the heat to it and that may get flimsy a little faster than you like. I will be very interested to see an update about how well this worked out. Also, the space you said you would leave in there is a good idea. It will make the tumbling process work better because it leaves room for the contents to move and mix as you tumble.

I store them upright. You can roll them as often as you like. Whenever you think about it. I do mine about once a week. If you find a method that works better for you please share. The wheels are holding up. I don't fill it full with 100% composted material. I fill is 3/4 of the way with un-composted material and let it compost down. The wheels should be fine. I'll keep you posted if I run into problems.

I have 3 composters, 2 rotate & do make the compost a lot faster! I rotate thru, adding to one until full, then adding to the next one, letting the first one cook. Also use mulch from the county (shredded trees & limbs the county pile at the recycling center) it works great and composts down fairly fast. Greens from lawn mowing get added . . . I also use my shredded paper (I have a micro shredder) with shredded newspaper and cardboard boxes, to mix in as browns. And keep a small pail in the kitchen for veggie peals, etc. As one gets done composting I spread it over the flowers & garden. Had a bumper crop in my garden this year & my flowers keep blooming beautifully!

Hi Clint, I also live in the PNW. It doesn't rain much at all where I live. There is an Ace Hardware here and I do have a trash bin from there; but, it doesn't have a clamp on lid. I don't recall even seeing any like the one you have in this video. I use my trash bin for composting. Since it doesn't have a clamp on lid, I can't really tumble the contents. I do try to turn the material every now and then with The Claw. Do you think wood pellets can be used as carbon material in the bin? I realize that this is an old video and the gardenfrugal.com doesn't exist at the link in the video description; but, I'm hoping that if you see this comment, you will reply. The video was definitely informative.

I just cannot help chuckling at these composters. My land throws off a bit more organic matter. So when I weed I use a truckbed liner with front wood sandwich and eye bolts so my mower can drag the bed liner like a sled of weeds. Weeding results in two piles about 6 foot high and 10 feet around. The piles rot and make great soil. Thinking to make a nice tumbler composter I will start by buying and old circus ferris wheel.

I made 2: #1 I drilled as you did. I live in high desert and it dried out fast and I had to keep watering it-took 6 weeks to break down. many holes make it structurally weak. #2 I only drilled 12 small holes. Now it stays nice and moist, and it is breaking down in 4 weeks, less effort on my part. Overall worth $12. I can store this in my garage to keep it away from bears in the summer which makes me VERY HAPPY. That said,I have had no rotting food smell given I tumble it every couple days.thx!

Not for nothing, but you said "rotating compost bin" and you made holes in a barrel. C'mon, you can do better; why take all day to make little holes; you killed a perfectly good barrel. All that air is unnecessary anyway since you must open the damn thing every day to throw scraps in and turn it. Nix on this. Thanks for a view.

FYI: According to Gardening now how.... Here are some reasons why many gardeners choose not to place tomato plants in compost: Composting spreads disease - Composting tomato plants can spread disease that could cause damage in the next year’s garden. Many diseases, such as fusarium wilt and bacterial canker, can survive the composting process, making them an unwelcome visitor later on.

Thank you for this video. I live in Dublin Ireland where we get plenty of rain and cold(ish) winters. My back yard is also covered in concrete, sadly, so a compost heap isn't an option. I've tried this and filled my first bin already, working on the second one. Now, I haven't been very disciplined about mixing, rotating or layering properly, so I invested in a compost agitator this week, which basically looks like a giant cork-screw. Today I went out to aerate the bin and although it has a way to go before it's cooked, I found some compost at the bottom! I was delighted! Hopefully as I aerate more regularly now and stop adding new material the rest will break down more quickly. I just wanted to let you know that it's working for me, and this video has been such a great help. We're saving money on household waste disposal, I don't feel like my organic waste is really wasted because I'm going to have beautiful compost soon, and it's been very simple and inexpensive. Thanks so much!

Thanks for this great tutorial. I've been putting off getting a tumbler, 'cause like you said, you need two. I can do this, even with my bad knees, I can roll it around enough to mix it. Here in Texas, ants are a MAJOR issue. They're climbing over everything in the garden; up the stems, on the leaves and even crawling all over the veggies. I've sprayed for aphids, but the ants aren't affected by it, other than to be pissed that I'm killing the aphids! LOL.... With all those holes in the bins, do you have problems with ants overtaking the bins? Thanks for anyone's input on that issue.

So NOW, I'm looking for a traditional tumbler now, unless I find something today or tomorrow that will work. For HOW many years did they make those with the double locking handles? ForEVER...that's how long and now.... My son said the same people probably make the tumblers and don't WANT us using them for other things...lol. I just figure they found a cheaper way.... Anyway, thanks again for your answer about ants. I'm OFF to look for alternatives to expensive tumblers now. Happy gardening!

There is no good reason for vegetarian/vegan dog food to exist. If someone is opposed to the use of animal products, perhaps they shouldn't have pets that eat meat. The vegetarian dog food might work fine for a dog; but I have to wonder what they have to do to it to make it suitable for dogs.

Yes, I collect leaves from all around the neighborhood as soon as they rake during a dry spell then hit the curb, before it rains or they get picked up by the City. Then you have them all year for your compost. Don’t forget to only pick up bags with out any holes poked in them, and I turn them upside down when I store them so the rain doesn’t get inside them throughout the year.

It's not ideal but it holds up okay so long as you don't fill it all the way up. I guess you get what you pay for. For $10 it does alright. You might have to spend a little more money to get something stronger to last.

The slugs and snails will find their way to your bin. I wouldn't worry too much about them in your compost pile.

Thanks! I have been composting in the same spot for over 40 years. I started with 2 areas of 3'x3' held by stacked cement blocks on 3 sides. Then I added a ring of metal fence about 3' in diameter and 3' high. It has really been neglected and is a mess. I am going to add 2 plastic trash cans like you show. Then build my wife some new raised garden beds. We had a nice garden in the very back of our yard for years but as the land behind us (to the south) has change in to a woods we gave up on gardening due to lack of sunlight. Some of the trees are 100' tall.

They need to be Red Wigglers. Not normal earth worms. They are really cheap. I would start at craigslist in your local area. So many people do worm bins you should be able to buy worm local and cheap to get things going. :) Let me know if you have any other questions. If you start one please report back how you like it. Thanks for watching.

The only thing to watch with corn cobs is to make sure no dogs have access to them. My dads a retired vet and has lots of stories about having to operate on dogs who had eaten whole corn cobs and then had bowel obstruction from it. 😬 But if it’s in an enclosed bin, no problem.

Its a great hobby with many rewards; there's nothing like fresh garden meals. I'd much rather be gardening than most anything else.

I had one of those compost tumblers and it did little to mix the ingredients - think of a clothes dryer when your sheets just ball up. I was able to sell it to some fool. My experience is the bigger your pile the more it heats up and composts faster. Get a compost thermometer to see if it is cooking. Tumblers do not hold much material and frankly are just a waste of time. Better off just making a pile on the ground. You can make a circular cage out of wire fencing if you want to keep it neat. Turn it over weekly with a pitchfork and add water. I use a Mantis tiller to mix and breakup my material. Also, the smaller the material the faster it cooks. Use a leaf shredder like Worx to pulverize your material. It will finish it 3-4 months will proper care.
