Here is my cut list for a 36in flag: You need a total of seven 21.75in boards and six 36in boards for the stripes. You also need four 19in boards for the back supports (this cut list will give you enough to add a 5th support if you want) You need to purchase five 1in x 2in x 8ft boards.... -Board 1: 36in, 36in, 21.75in (2.25in remaining excess) -Board 2: 36in, 36in, 21.75in (2.25in remaining excess) -Board 3: 36in, 36in, 21.75in (2.25in remaining excess) -Board 4: 21.75in, 21.75in, 21.75in, 21.75in (9in remaining excess) -Board 5: 19in, 19in, 19in, 19in (20in remaining excess, I used it to create a 5th back support board resulting in only 1in excess) ***If you need to make a union, a 1in x 12in x 4ft board ripped to 10.5in will yield enough for 3 unions measuring 10.5in x 14.25in each.

This is amazing. I can't begin to explain my appreciation for this video. Although I will never capitalize on your ideas or hard work, I do, however, want to make these for friends & family. My daughters boyfriend is an electrician & he is helping me turn my shed into a small wood shop. The very 1st flag I make, will go to him. He's a Navy vet. I'm Army, I reckon you can imagine the fun we have with that. Anyway. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Just an off-beat true story about a flag for a veteran: I walked into a cafe in Norman, Ok, with my wife one morning a year or so back. As soon as I entered, there was a lady at a table there who asked me if I was a Veteran. I told her that I was. She immediately handed me an American flag that she had put together with beads and had made herself. I explained to her that I was not a Vietnam veteran, but I was a Vietnam era veteran and that others would likely be eating there on that day who were much more deserving of her gift than I was. She insisted that I take the flag and said it did not matter to her in the least, as she wanted me to have it for serving my country in the military. I was hesitant to accept, because of all the work she had put into it and because I did feel there were others more in need of such an honor, but I did take it and as soon as I got home I found a place right in my living room to show it off and to admire the love she had put into doing such for a vet she didn't even know. There are many good people in this world who respect, honor and love the people who serve our nation and support and defend it. This woman was one, for sure and to this day, I keep that flag right where i can look it proudly and think kindly of that woman who gave it to me. God bless America and our troops, as well as the citizens like this woman who care so much in giving a piece of their own heart to our service men and women.

I've never advertised but really enjoy making them for family and Army buddies locally. Interesting how everybody does this differently. I paint first, then join, then burn, and make stars from a chisel. Interesting to see the method of using a stain. A great hobby and I get compliments all the time on my two flags in my office and monster flag I fixed to my fence out front. Keep it up guys.

How about a follow-up video in making the union to this flag? I was also thinking, why not make a two-sided flag that has long stakes sandwiched between them so it can be pushed into the ground at a garden area or such? You could easily do this with the support 1"X2" pices you made to hold the wood together if they were longer and maybe made to a point at the end of them. Nice video, but all the troll crap always ruins the best effort of people to post such and allow comments because of it. I have burned wood, but I also like the effect of home made stains made from stainless steel and vinegar used on old pallet boards or even fence posts/pickets that I got for a fence repair at Lowe's. Nice job and thanks.

Hey a1930ford, there are multiple ways to make the union yourself. We started by making a template in Microsoft Office and tracing it onto stencil paper from Hobby Lobby. We then used a knife to cut the stars out of the stencil and could use that stencil to trace the stars onto the union. After the stars are traced, you can use a dremel or a hammer and chisel to engrave them into the union. Hammer and chisel takes more practice to get right but ends up being quicker and better than a Dremel in my opinion. This is the most cost efficient way to make the stars yourself. I have also seen people buy stencils on Amazon but they’re not always proportional for their flag and they’re limited to the one size and style. We will be making a follow up video in the near future covering all of this. However, to make the unions with our level of quality and detail that we offer on our website would cost you thousands of dollars in equipment and multiple tutorial videos. For this reason, we did not go into the details on this video but decided to offer them already completed for $34.95 on THATflagcompany.com in order to provide another option that we wish had been previously available to us when we were starting. I hope this video was useful for you and the follow up response helps give some additional clarity. If you have any questions we can help with, definitely don’t hesitate to ask!

On my third flag. First was an experiment and is hanging in the garage as an example of mistakes. Second one is hanging in my office. On my third I got over confident. went through all the steps and finally flipped it over, marked for the bracing, put glue between the boards, clamped them up while pushing the slightly bent ones back down, put glue on the first bracing, lined it up, pressed down to hold it in place, grabbed the nail gun, and phssssst. The cheap 15yr old nail gun blew a seal. No, I did not throw the nail gun across the room like I wanted to. I put the other bracing in place ran another board across them and set my small generator (40+lbs) on them to hold them in place and walked away. It dawned on me this morning that I had not put anything under the flag so I am afraid to go back to look since it may glued itself to the bench. PMCS your equipment before you start the mission and it may save you and the mission.

I’ve used 1x12. I’ve found a couple shops in the area that can laser engrave the stars for me. However, they charge more than this company just to do the engraving with me supplying my own wood. Might as well order it from these guys. Plus it’s helping a great company

@@thatflagcompany7105 I need to order a new shirt. After a few years if hard use I've had to sacrifice the sleeves because of holes in the under arm. Not a complaint. A testimony in fact to the quality of their apparel to underscore your earlier statement to the quality of the company. The hoodie is holding up just fine.

How long to the 1x2s need to be cut for the larger Union flags that you make? I know the longer stripes are 48" but what should the length of the shorter stripes and the braces be?
@thatflagcompany7105

Peyton Kusel, measurements for the 48” flag are: 7x short stripes at 29”x 2” 6x long stripes at 48”x2” 4x braces at 24.5”x2” Union is 19"x14" Measurements for the 36” flag are: 7x short stripes at 21.75”x1.5” 6x long stripes at 36”x1.5” 4x braces at 18.5”x1.5” Union is 10.5”x14.25” Hope this helps and enjoy your builds!!

This is an awesome video! This is something I've been wanting to do for my family and friends for some time but just haven't done it yet because I've been busy doing other things. Thank you so much for this video and showing how to do this. I am not a Veteran myself but all men and one woman in my family are. I worked for the VA for 41 years and have many friends who are Veterans and I respect them for their sacrifices and service. Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving this great country!

I recieved the order I placed, built the 36 inch flag..and WOW...I immediately order 2 more unions as the one I built is a Christmas present. I am also building one for our local sheriff department because we need our first responders and they seem to get neglected around here. The quality of the union I got is great. Look for me purchasing a lot more in the future. Again thanks for your service and best wishes. And Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Thank you so much for sharing. I recently started making flags and learned a lot from your video. However, I was recently told not to glue the stripes because it will cause the flag to warp over time when the woods shrinks and expands? Have you, or other viewers had this issue?

Good point, might be best to just brad nail the stretchers and call it good. Maybe just glue stretchers on and brad nail.

Does the company share what stain they used so you can match? For example, if you are getting black version, you will need to stain your own stripes and match to the stain on the union.

What's the turnaround time on the Unions? Do you keep them in stock or make each based on the order? 8 packs and individuals. Thx God Bless 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Hey snleclaire1111. We make everything to order and the turnaround time fluctuates. Right now, we are averaging 4-5 days. Sometimes we’re able to ship out an order in 1-2 days, and we have never want to see a union order get older than 10 days. Hope this helps and always feel free to email us at info@thatflagcompany.com.

Bret, it is a single board (pine) for the union. After getting lots of requests for stencils (others being sold online were apparently disproportionate), we have finally started offering stencils for this size of flag, as well as some other size options too. Hey Gotham! We actually use the same color of stain for the blue stripe as we do the Union. The secret is to not burn the middle of your stripe and the color will POP off of the natural wood color beneath it. Hope this helps and good luck!!
