Your idea works great! I use a 4 gallon / 3hp shop vac and an old 1/2 gallon round v8 juice bottle. I drilled about 10 half inch holes, four an inch up from the bottom of the cut out bottle and six where it starts tapering to the pour spout. It is amazing how well the bottle modification works. I believe the extra holes allows for more airflow and maybe it is a little easier, add holes until you are happy with the separation of seed and chaff. Best DIY idea I have found, thank you

THANK YOU! I'd been puzzling over this for a couple of years.(Don't know why I didn't look online straight away. I just like to think things through at times, I guess.) Hadn't even thought of 'winnowing'. I'd been wondering if you were losing half the seeds too, until you opened the dust container at the end. Great job. BTW How many birds do you have? That was a lot of seed.

what I do is to take the cup of seed and gently blow it. the hulls will fly out and leave the seed behind but you would have to be outside/over a garbage can bc otherwise the hulls end up everywhere.

Just make sure you put a larger opening like a jug or container to reduce the strength of the vacuum and don't hold it in the same on position for to long.

That's a clever idea. Thank you. I've been throwing out tons from the feeder bowls in their cage. I was wondering how or if I was able to save the good seed if at all. I only have two female parakeets this should work well. I'm a beginner bird owner. Thank you again.

Hey, I'm glad I could help you out with this idea. It took me forever to find a good way to work through the bad seed and save the good ones. I'm glad I could share my idea and help save good food & help eliminate waste. 😁

Any suggestions as to how to stop my parakeets from dumping their seed in the bottom of their cage? It then has to be thrown away no way to save it. Thanks for any suggestions.

When my bird throws away her seeds I just clear it out from tbe cage and put them out where other birds will make use of it

This is cool but you gotta watch that only the crappy seeds are left over. They eat all the good ones first.

Do you only feed them seeds or do you feed them other stuff like veggies?

Fruit's, veggies, vitamin blocks and minerals with grit. But those are occasional. Daily is the seeds.

How does the vacuum not suck up the good ones? It’s powerful right?
@TheStrivering

It's a powerful vacuum but since the cone is so big the strength is dispersed over the area and the power decreases..so it doesn't pick up the good ones.

If it sucks too many good seeds, drill holes in the container, I found 10 one/half inch holes worked good to lower pressure with a 3 hp shop vac as my vacuum

Why not doing that directly in the container bc that looks like a pain to clean up
@TheStrivering

It has to be spread in a thin layer so the vaccum can easily get the empty seed.

Then do it right away and not colecting it. I have parots too and i use a portable vacuum to get the debrees right away from the small containers and i just shake it to get everything

Awesome. Parrots are awesome. Im glad you get to share the joy of bonding with a parrot. Thank you for sharing the way you clean your used seeds. Everyone has a different way of cleaning their food. There's no right or wrong. I shared the way I do it. I find this more entertaining.. to collect a bucket of used seeds that used to be thrown away and now its recycled and fills a solid container, that's more amusing to me than going through a little bowl that was already worked through to save maybe 15 seeds/grains and then you have to add new seeds on top either way cause that's not enough. Again, that's my opinion, the way I am with my budgies, and the way that's proven to work for me.
