Thx for video. Paper towel will reduce this down to one melting. Cheers

Good information on wax melting. I didn't know about the need for a thermal mass. I'm going to try this and see if I can get good, clean wax. Shame about the Warre hive, I use both Warre and Langstroth hives and I really like the Warre hives more. The bees like it too and in my opinion, while it's true it does use up more wax I don't think it's disrespectful nor harmful to the bees and I will explain why. Warre hives are managed different from Langstroth hives. New boxes are added to the bottom, unlike adding new boxes to the top as you do with Langstroth hives. So it's nadiring rather than supering. As bees expand their hive downward, the brood chamber moves downward with it and the old brood comb makes it's way up with each new box expansion becoming room to store honey. It's probably going to be two years before that new box is ready to be harvested for honey and that's about the time it's recommended to replace old brood comb anyway. Overall it's better for the bees health to not reusing comb over and over so it doesn't become a vector for disease, and the queen gets to keep laying in new comb as she prefers. At the same time, Warre hives don't get supered with dawn comb like Langstroths do for extra honey, so the harvest is less and therefore they can draw out more wax because they aren't losing as much honey from the harvest. In addition to that, the Warre hive was designed with careful attention to honey bee behavior and the dimensions of the hive as well as the design features of using telescoping, peeked roofs with an air buffer, on top of a breathable quilt box with absorbent material give bees more control over the temperature of the hive and it keeps out moisture. The bees spend less energy keeping hive temperature and there isn't the dead space a rectangular Langstroth has. Just my observations and study, I'm very fond of these hives and my bees do better in them.

A double pane window is not necessarily counter indicated for this project. The heat in the melter comes from the light that penetrates the glass. Having a double or triple pane window will actually keep more of the heat inside the melter. If anything that could make the solar melter too hot. Keeping an eye on the whole set-up and venting excess heat from time to time would fix that. As you mentioned you don't want to get the wax too hot. Good video, thanks.

You should probably name your videos to correspond to the subject matter in the video. The DIY Solar Beeswax Melter was not mentioned until 4:45...

You should have the wax strain over a cloth and drip into water, and wash cap pings before you melt

What does the thermal mass do? Literally absorbs heat and radiates it?

place paper towel on the dirty tray then the wax on the paper.....the paper filters the wax and then can be used as a fire starter.

Where are you getting those numbers on how many miles bees must fly to make wax? And how is it that bees which have never left the hive produce wax? I'm very interested in your sources. I research wax production and have never come across these figures. I have, of course, come across the old wives tales of , "it takes (3-20) pounds of (honey/nectar/feed) to make one pound of wax", but of course we know that was never factual. If you still monitor this channel please let me know where you found these figures. It may prove valuable to my work. Thank you sir.

Crush and Strain is not a disrespectful method at all.

It certainly is if you consider the entire energy budget of the hive. Building comb is one of the most costly things the hive does. It is much more respectful of the hive's energy budget to decap the comb and put back 95% of it to be refilled rather than have the bees rebuild the comb before it can be refilled.

And how is that disrespect. I choose to crush and strain. I use every bit of the honey and wax for Honey, candles, soaps, cut comb and chunk comb. No waist and no disrespect.

They're bees.... They will always be doing something. While honey production may suffer, they'll always be working away regardless of what it is they're doing. Bees don't sit around thinking "Man, this sucks.. I just built that cone". Why do hippies always put a human emotion to bees? Rick, if you're a beekeeper, I surely hope you don't live near me. You're the kind of idiot that would try to cure a colony of AFB or EFB instead of taping up the hive and tossing it in a burning barrel.

Joe shit the rag man the bees can refill & make more honey, instead of spending time /energy making comb. if you can't work it out, i can't help you.

Bees make wax from their glands. Why do they need to fly around the world 6 times to make a pound of wax ?
@markcarey5673

Everything a bee makes is fueled by the nectar it gets from flowers. Wether it is wax or honey they still have to put in the time and flight. I don't know how accurate the milage figures are but making wax is the most energy intensive thing they do.
