oof when 1x3 furring strips go for "$1.50 a pop" in 2019 and now they are $7.50. Kinda makes me want to cry as I am sliding my debit card in the machine... All seriousness aside, (cause $7.50 is no joke), great video. I just started my framing and I was really tired of looking everywhere for a sprinter vid. You got a subscriber out of me!

Great video guys! Only just got around to watching this but brilliant simple functional way to frame it out! You could have possibly used strips of that thin plywood screwed/glued-up in a couple of layers for thickness and strength but also lightness (instead of the solid-wood strip?) Would have given you a bit more strength per given thickness on the support members and holding power for any screws (due to the cross-grain plus probably work out cheaper I'd imagine??) ...Just an idea to consider for the future, to cut strips and laminate up some thin plywood to thickness you want instead of the pine or whatever..? But love your channel and your build! Cheers from London England 👍😎🏴
@Vankookz

Thanks for thr idea but plywood is still so expensive it's cheaper to buy the strips. But if you want to spend a bit more that would ne a nice way to do it.

I want to share my review of the Fantastic Vent 3350 because my experience with the fan is anything but fantastic. I bought mine 18 months ago, as friends, who have an older model, said it was very good. However mine makes a lot of noise and pushes so little air that I can barely tell if I have it set to exhaust or blow. If I turn it up to get more airflow it becomes even noiser! The rain sensor closes the vent at night so I can only assume that it senses the night time moisture and closes even though it is NOT raining. My friend's older model seems to push more air than my newer model. I get much better & quieter airflow from my little Sirocco fan and it was only $!60 not over $600. Dometic agreed to replace the fan and the airflow improved a little but it is still very noisy AND the rain sensor closes the fan at really odd times like late afternoon. So we can't use the fan unless we manually open the cover. So in summary, I have found it an appallingly poor performing fan that is just not worth the money.

Thank you! We totally agree the Fantastic fans are garbage ours is completely falling apart in our van I'm about to replace it with something better like a Maxx air

@@Vankookz The rain sensor drives me nuts as it closes at the strangest times, even when there is no moisture around. That means we have to manually open it and cannot run the fan because it just closes again - sigh!!

You are both soooo helpful, thank you for being detailed... QUESTION: when putting up framing boards for the walls, cabinets, etc... are we able to drill the boards down on the ribs anywhere? Meaning; can we drill into the steal of the ribs anywhere; or do the nails we drill have to be lined up with existing holes? I hope you understand what I am asking lol; sorry if it's confusing.
@Vankookz

Yes you want to drive those screws into new holes make sure there aren’t any wires or that your screws aren’t too long that they go through the van.

For viewers out there, dont use wire knobs for wire connections in a van. The vibration and movement over time could cause the connection to come lose. Crimp and heat shrink is better.

Important tip: tape off the area around where you'll jigsaw the hole in the roof, it keeps the jigsaw from scratching the paint. Also, meticulously clean the shavings off, as they will rust within days and rust the roof where lying to make a mess. If you're roof is curved, put a double layer of the butyl tape around the low areas to build it to flatness for the vent. You can run a plastic putty knife around to trim away the squeeze out of the butyl tape after tightening down the screws to get a nice clean edge.

Hi guys!!! It's me again ;) You put reflectix, then framing and then paneling living gap behind and this is how reflectix WILL work inside your van. Great job!!! About wood touching reflectix, I think that it still will work because wood isn't that good conductor. And just a tip: better way to silicone roof fan is to put silicone under frame of fan and then screw it tho the roof. Sorry for language mistakes, hope you understand ;) Edit: you put some tape under fan frame, somehow I've missed that. My tip is useless here :p

How did you make sure the screws didn’t go through the roof when drilling the wood in the ceiling ?
@Vankookz

Don't get long screws. Measure your wood thickness and the cavity thickness and give yourself about a half inch of wiggle room so you don't hit daylight.

so when screwing the framing on, do you sink the screws right into the van metal? do you need a special type of screw to go into the metal frame?

You need a self tapping screw. They make wood to metal self tappers. This will do the trick. Hope it's not too late.

When drilling the frame pieces in, how do you make sure the drills don't penetrate through to the outside of the van?
@Vankookz
4 жыл бұрын
The frame pieces only get attached to the ribs in the van, (where the van body’s structural support makes what looks like a little speed bump on the inside) that way there is a cavity between the outside of the van and the metal you are attaching it to...that is where your screw will sit. You also need to make sure your self tapping screw is long enough to go thru your wood and attach to that metal, but not thru the second outside piece of metal. I hope that makes sense! Let us know if it doesn’t, Kevin can probably explain it better if it doesn’t! Thanks for watching! Good luck!

@Vankookz
4 жыл бұрын
What would you recommend?
@HomesteadOC
4 жыл бұрын
Van Kookz junction boxes are standard in traditional home construction, but for vans i would solder and heat shrink or use the gel crimp connections that are weatherproof. Data utility companies use them.
@HomesteadOC
4 жыл бұрын
Van Kookz kind of hard to change it now, but wire nuts can jiggle loose, so maybe just see what happens. Once you get an open circuit then you can tear back into it. DC wirenutting is safer than AC I guess.

We actually did end up going back and heat shrinking a few. Good to know. I recently did another van and used the weatherproof gel and heat shrink. Thanks for the solid advice! The wire nuts in my current van have held up for over 3 years now 0 problems! Thanks for watching!
