Looks really good! Besides the number of code violations stated by others - at least in my jurisdiction. I question the structural integrity of the 2x4's on their weak axis when loaded with lateral force. Mean no harm, just my unsolicited opinion. I really do like the design though.

looks good, but stair rails are primarily a safety feature, so be careful where you cut the budget: flat bar is a little flexible; push one out and pull one in, and you may be able to stick more than a hand through. plus, by attaching it directly to the face of the lumber, you are relying on only the shear strength of the screws to hold it in place. as long as no one rests a foot on it while leaning on the rail, it should be fine, but, i would have preferred setting in in a shallow dado. square tubing in a deeper dado would be even better. also, as someone else mentioned 3 days ago, you've made a ladder for children, albeit, an uncomfortable one, so education on the laws of gravity and motion will be paramount for the little ones.
@JEFFDI
3 жыл бұрын
Careful...in CA that 2x4 top cap, sloped section, would not fly as "grippable" rail (though one could be mounted alongside the system you have there, maybe...) and some jurisdictions won't allow upper guardrail that acts as a ladder for kids to hop over rail. Other than the safety issues, I really like it. The handrail must be grippable and between 1 1/4 and 2 inches in diameter at 34 to 38" off the tread nose. Many other details to be safe.. Handrails are tricky and inspectors are picky on them. Best of luck. Thanks for sharing. Cool rail.

Ana, I'm a big fan, but I'm not sure about this. It's gorgeous, but I'm not sure it's sturdy enough for stair and balcony rail. Attaching the top rail into end grain, using flatbar with a lot of flex, only attaching the verticals with a couple of screws each...I dunno. I'm in Tennessee, and I doubt this would pass codes here. Kids are going to climb anything that looks like a ladder if they catch Mommy not looking, and I would be uneasy about the lateral load that this rail could handle.

Also did you use one coat or two? I love the color you achieved and wood like to duplicate it as closely as possible. Also, what brand of paint did you use for the metal strips? Codes here do allow for horizontal railings. We agree this can be a safety issue, but my experience is a child can move a stool or even a toy to climb over a railing. Where there is a will there is a way. We have horizontal railings at our home and have trained our children that railings are not for climbing on.

@Troy-Echo
3 жыл бұрын
I'm curious. Why did you not use the same species of wood as it in the ceiling, and the same finish? The work does look nice overall, but it doesn't match the wood ceiling. This looks like it was 8 or fewer 2x4's, so buying the same species of wood shouldn't impact the budget as much as the different type of wood will impact the view. If this was my house, that difference would stand out and annoy me with the handrail until I replaced the handrail with matching wood or sold the house. That just seems an odd place to save a few bucks to me.
@richardgray1730
3 жыл бұрын
I know that you answered that this meets code in your area. But I am really surprised that the bottom 3 steps do not need a handrail too! I see where the landing is about 21 inches above the floor and if the landing was a deck not handrail is required. But here the inspector would count the landing as a step and the handrail for stairs must continue to the last step... all I can say is know the code in your area so you do not get caught and are required by the inspector to make it right after the fact.

I like it but I think painting the wood white would have made it blend together better. To me, it looks like 2 x 4's screwed onto the staircase. Painting it white would make it seem more custom and blend it in, so as not to make the 2 x 4's so in your face. No harm meant here, just my opinion. I also would have routered the edges of the 2 x 4's that face out into the room. That also would help take away the 2 x 4 look. I do like the look of the metal bands in there tho. I will use that somewhere.
