Follow along as I self-build my own unique camper van inside a 2015 Ford Transit 350 Extended Cargo Van -- with no experience. ...and when I say "no experience," I mean ZERO EXPERIENCE! I have never done anything like this before, so I am learning as I go. I will make some mistakes, but that's okay.
In this project, I chose to use foam board insulation. I chose this mostly based on price, R-Value, inherent structure, and "ease of installation" (though it wasn't as "easy" as I thought it would be). I didn't care as much about noise reduction since noises don't tend to come from below your vehicle while camping. I also wanted to use something that would maintain its shape easily.
I should note that I could have done my framing differently if I was using a fiber-based insulation like Wool, Thinsulate, Fiberglass, etc. I may have been able to do things differently if I had more experience and/or knowledge. But you have to make decisions based on needs, budget, and knowhow.
I say this because...
My end product may look a little weird. I am aware that I made some possibly strange choices, lol. BUT, it worked out in the end and (now that my floor is actually done and I have had it a while), it is quite stable. :)
This video highlights the cutting and installation of the foam board, and includes gluing down both the insulation and the frame that I made in my previous video. In my next video, I will fill in all the gaps with spray foam, seal the gaps with tape to create a moisture barrier, and put my pre-cut plywood subfloor back in and secure it to the frame.
Tools/Materials I used:
Ryobi Circular Saw (to finish last-minute framing pieces)
Cheap Utility Knife (maybe not the best tool for the job, but it worked)
Tape measure
SikaPro Construction Adhesive (for the wood)
3M™ Hi-Strength 90 Spray Adhesive (for the foam board)
Pro Select R-Matte Plus-3, 1 in. x 48 in. x 8 ft. R-6.0 ISO Rigid Foam Board Insulation
Thank you so much for watching!
