Absolutely love this design. I'll make a version for my mom's porch. It faces west, so maybe instead of having the bottom 2 planters in the back for plants, they'll be shelves with a lip for her gardening supplies. Since those won't get any sun. You are just the best, Mr. Peech!

Due to health issues that hospitalized me for a week and took another few months to bounce back fully, I lost my job. I've never filed for unemployment due to the strict work ethic I was raised with. So, on days when I had energy, I would build "smalls" in my garage/workshop. I've always enjoyed woodworking and have collected a decent amount of preloved power tools over the years. On days where energy wasn't up to par, I'd gather reclaimed wood from all over to save on materials costs. I came across your videos while in the hospital, which is what gave me the idea of making a little extra money to help me get by. I was able to get a part-time job after about 8 months, but due to my age, now 64, I had to deal with nobody else wanting to hire me due to my age. So I continued my "smalls" builds to help me make ends me. I am so very thankful for your videos. Your "smalls" builds are items I can cut out and do several of in a few hours after work each day without tiring me out. Thank you for sharing. You are a Godsend to many with your videos. 😊

Hey Matthew. I would like to suggest that the side walls be turned upside down or that the pocket hole be drilled from the other boards. The reason is that the pocket holes in the side wall are opened upwards and would much easier to collect and store water.

Love this design. I will be making a few of these for my mom and sister as well as selling a few. One thing that may be advisable is changing the orientation of the pocket holes so they don’t act as a funnel for gravity to channel water down into the pocket holes. I know the screw is kind of a plug, but over time (and regular, repeated waterings) it might be better if the pocket holes angled up instead of down.

I learned something this week, women around here seem to prefer ugly mismatched pallet wood over pine or cedar picket wood. I built a few ugly box planters for our personal garden. She showed other women and now they want some just like them. Big ones sits two feet high with box size 12x12x36. I lined them with plastic and put a drain in the bottom since there was no way to get the pallet wood tight enough to hold dirt and I know it would rot fast. Boards are different thicknesses, all different colors including blue painted ones. One she liked the most used the pallet runners for the legs, I put the cut out for the forks facing outward and for as ugly as I think it is that's the big one everyone wants. It's 100% pallet wood unlike the others I used 2x4's for frame and legs. So it's certainly the cheapest even has a lot of the nails still in it just hammered over. Small ones are just pot holders so no plastic and 14 inches square length, width and depth with legs being 16 inches total just to keep it off the ground. Made entirely from the top boards off pallets. Here I'm thinking build something nice and women want that total scrap ugly nothing matches look. This is the Texas hill country where the ranchers have always just used whatever they had laying around to make stuff so it's almost cultural here and maybe that's why what I never intended to sell is what people want.

Adding cross braces near the bottom planters to make it an A-frame would greatly improve the strength of this planter so you would not be relying on the lap joint and the top planter boxes for the rigidity of the frame. This would help make this planter last longer.

I notice the thickness isn’t consistent on your pickets either. The one side is often thicker than the other. I try to find the best ones but a lot of times have to settle with whatever the lumber yard has or I’m digging through the whole pile. So when doing projects like the three tier box planter I end up with waver side panels from matching thin to thin and vice versa. Any tips to combat this?

When people ask about pricing, the calculation is as follows: (Cost of materials x 0.15 "consumables, wear and tear") + (hours spent x value of 1 hour of your time) = Price I value my time at $40/ hour. That is what someone would have to pay me at 35 hours/week to work for them. This rate also includes the cost of health insurance, deductions, and other benefits. Also, if you are doing trade shows, spending money on advertising, or have any other expenses, it needs to be factored in. Again, I like to use the hourly model. So if you pay $400/month for a work space, divide that between 35 hours per week and add that to the cost of your time/labour.
