As a welder I must advise that you DO NOT DO THIS, heating SS up to the temp that it changes color results in the release of Hexaventalte Chromium...BAD SHIT
@21284Carlo

would this be just during the process or will it always release chromium after doing this.
@seandaugherty3266

Carlo Simone This would happen during the heating process and they you would have lose free radicals on the surface of the SS that can break free by vibration light heating etc.

I sometimes have access to Laboratory fume hoods, Laminar-flow benches, and Biosafety Cabinets. All of these have premium air ventilation. So after I perform this heat treating, would the final color changed SS still be dangerous to vape after cooling in ice water? Does the oxidation of the material inhibit the safety qualities of the SS?

I think you do a really good job with this. I actually stumbled upon your website today looking for wide bore drip tips. I'm sure I'll end up spending some money there at some point down the road, or sooner. But anyways, I wanted to comment to let you know that you could get a much better uniform finish by attaching the top cap to a tie rod stuck into a drill chuck and setting the drill to a medium low speed. Would really get rid of some of the splotches and unevenness that Ive seen.

what I do with my gun parts is to get the metal hot and after it starts to turn blue drop it into clean motor oil and use the oil to quench it and it will give it a deep blue and purple finish that will last and will give it a wild color, it is what we call color hardening in the firearms industry,, try it on an old one to see if you like it,, it will make the best looking finish you can get,,

I had a ruger357 magnum that was tinted bronze by a professional, he tinted all the time, he used and oven for the parts, with a 3 day cook at around 250 or 300 degrees, it was awesome looking. I think a slow long cook retains metal hardness better, that's how they do bathroom fixtures.

Would I be able to get the top cap of my Z-Atty on my Zenesis 2 to the same look at the "Gun Metal" accessories, like the battery tubes? I can tell that the same process was used because the inside of the tube has that color gradient from black-blue to dark blue to blue to purple to gold. Sorta like color case hardening on a firearm.

For those inquiring about whether or not their atomizer/drip tip is stainless, some have recommended using a magnet. FYI, not all stainless steel is magnetic. There are several different types of stainless steels. The two main types are austenitic and ferritic, each of which exhibits a different properties. Due to this difference, ferritic stainless steels are generally magnetic while austenitic stainless steels usually are not. The best way to check is sand the bottom a little bit (where it hides inside the atomizer). If the color doesn't change, chances are it is stainless. Otherwise, it is most likely plated brass, or if it is really light, aluminum.

Have you tried Anodizing using a voltage supply? I know voltage supply can only be done with titanium but figured I’d ask? If so, do u notice a difference in color, brightness, or the way it shines or even the durability of the color? It seems like it would be much easier to get an even tone using my voltage supply, unless the colors come out better using heat?

This isn't hardened. To harden it would be heated to glowing then submerged in oil or water to cool rapidly. It's after this hardening that you "Temper" steel, I put it in my kitchen oven for an hour at full heat. The temper creates the lovely gold colour. That's what he is doing here. This is surface colour only. Take some light sand paper to it and it'll be silver again.

Iv done this on a few motorcycle parts, to answer a few questions that people seem to be asking... 'can i turn it black?' the answer is YES, either let it heat more and it will turn a dark grey, if thats not dark enough you can heat it and quench it in used dirty motor oil until it cools, remove then wipe the part when cool. this will turn it black, you can repeat it aswell to get the desired darkness you want... 'Can i do this to aluminium' YES but not this exact process, you need to look up ANODIZING which is similar but any colour can be acheived using heat, coloured dye and distilled water. Hope this helps a few folk ;)

I tried torching my nemesis stainless steel brushed tubes and they turned out pretty cool, but then after I cooled it down and dried it with a towel, the colors started to look a little faded. Almost hard to even tell that I torched it at all. But then I tried running it under some water and partially dried it, and the colors seemed to show a little more. Is it the water that makes the colors show up more, or the type of steel? Maybe the colors show more on polished as opposed to brushed steel?

Another note, as mentioned in the video, he has messed up a lot of caps doing this. Not 100% true. You can buff out the color if you go to far. It only affects the surface atoms, so you can keep redoing it if you mess up. it does take practice, but it is not the end-all to your finish. I change my cap colors often, just because I can. :) Oh, and any caps you want to throw away? send em to me!
