Just did my first oil change, pretty messy process but I learned a lot and felt proud of myself. Hardest part for me was getting the oil filter off, it was in a really uncomfortable spot. You don't really need the tools he was using to get the filter off, you can use your hands, depends how tight it is. Good luck to anyone else having to do this.
@1950harleycharley

If it will come off with your hand, it might not have been tight enough...You can tighten with your hand as tight as possible and then with a wrench give it a quarter turn tighter.
@joeyjonson6017

You DO need the correct filter removal tool. Rarely but occasionally can you remove the filter with your hand. And on newer model Camrys it is a cartridge type filter and a housing. You cannot remove the filter housing with your hand. The correct tool is for sale at auto parts stores. For the 07 Camry you need the three prong filter removal tool that is turned with a 3/8 inch extension and a ratchet.
@joeyjonson6017

Never use a tool to tighten a metal canister style filter on a Toyota. Lubricate the seal on the filter with new oil if it is not an oem Toyota filter. Some of the oem Toyota filters are pre- lubricated therefore do not require additional lubrication. But hand tighten only. Using a tool to tighten a canister style filter can make it extremely difficult to remove and more importantly you run the risk of causing the seal of the filter to buckle and leak oil. Especially if you use cheap filters and don't lubricate the seal and use a tool to tighten the filter. Buckling the seal can result in a leak that can ultimately ruin the engine.
@rocketboyjv5474

Sometimes those filters can get on really tight and you may not have ample space to get a good grip and leverage on it with your hand. I would expect to need a wrench.
@andygott8409
4 жыл бұрын
I only use my hand to hand tighten and remove the oil filter. Never had a problem of it loosening and never had the gasket stuck on there either from over tightening. Use a bit of oil on the seal and you are good to go.

Good video.Although I must note some things you did wrong. This is coming from a Master Certified Ford Technician. Never leave a vehicle supported by a hydraulic jack alone.This is really unsafe.I noticed the jack stands which are supposed to be used but I didn't notice if the car was resting on them. Also if possible,prefill the filter.Finally, always start the vehicle first before checking the level because if you don't, since oil is not in the filter,you will get a inaccurate reading of high.

@yolanda, you can use either but if you know the history of the car keep using the same type that the engine has always been running. I had mine since new 2005 and always used Castrol GTX conventional 5w-30 but in my area, recently, I can only find Castrol GTX 5w-30 synthetic blend, so I've been using that for about a year and haven't had any leaks.

Always go with what is stamped on the engine or oil cap, that superseeds the owner's manual. In this case either 0w-20 or 5w-20. 2002-2006 models have 5w-30 on the oil cap so that's what you use for those years.

To prevent loosing oil drain plug in to the oil tray,I finally installed magnetic socket insert,in my 14mm socket. Just before you open enough oil drain plug,but before oil starts to leak out ,use socket with a magnet and 6" or 8" socket extension to remove it. You will never loose oil drain plug,and you will never have to clean it again.

regardless if you live in a condo or not, you should be able to do your oil changes yourself, you save half of what you might pay in a garage, car jack and stands in a kit can cost as low as $50 when on sale, check harbor freight website. oil can be disposed into any gas station that collects used chemicals and oils, call your city and find out who collects them. also you will need an oil pan and funnel. always use the recommended oil for your vehicle and always use car stands when you work under your car and not the jack alone. good luck.

Hoang Tran okay let me help you. Purchase oil and a filter on amazon. Saves you $10. If you dont want a hydraulic jack then use your jack your car comes with. Place a 4x4 or a brick under as well just incase. Get to work. You can pour the old oil in the new oils container after uve “used” the new oil. Than dispose of it at ur local auto shops who recycle old oil. Oil is very cheap

At the place I used to take my car to it cost 80 dollars for synthetic oil change/fluid top ups, it was a drive in garage quick and good service. I have since bought an oil filter wrench adapter, and have been jacking my car up with the jack in the trunk (using cinder blocks for jackstands) and doing my own oil using cheap but quality conventional oil. It now costs me around 30 dollars an oil change.
