My daughter wanted a new bed and couldn't find anything she liked at IKEA or other furniture store so she decided to design and build one (with some help from Grandpa) and we built this together! Here's the cuts we made and the tools we used:
Twin Bed Dimensions and cuts (Double-check and adjust measurements if you are building a larger bed):
2 - 2x4x8’ - (Select/Premium - 1.5” x 3.5”) Trimmed to 3” in width on the table saw and cut to 36” in length for the Headboard and 16” in length for the foot-board
3 - 5/4x6x8’ - (Select Pine - 1” x 5.5”) Cut 2 at 38” in length for the headboard and foot-board, and 2 at 78” in length for along the side/length of the bed.
1 - 5/4x4x8 - (Select Pine - 1” x 3.5”) Cut 2 at 38” for the headboard (or use more cross bars if you prefer).
2 - 2x2x8’ - (Furring Strips - 1.5” x 1.5”) Cut to 78”. These will mount to your 5/4”x5.5”x78” side-boards and will support the cross-bracing that will support the mattress. Add another one down the center and support with a 2x2 at the base of the footboard and headboard IF you are building a full, queen or king bed.
5 - 1x3x8’ - (Furring Strips - .75’ x 2.5”) Cut to 11 strips at 39.75” (or close to that) in length for the cross/bar/slats that will support the mattress
16-18 - Pine 5/16” wood plugs
Of course you can adjust these measurements if you desire to build your bed a different size. Just measure twice and cut once!
We recommend using SELECT Pine or other premium cut lumber that is straight. It’s really nice to start with straight wood. You could build this out of Cedar, Pine, Oak, Ash… whatever you can find. Happy Building!
