Face shield and eyepro. You absolutely do not want the sodium hydroxide powder or solution in your eyes. That said I'm going to give this a shot

Add sand and NaOH to a ball mill like a rock tumbler and add ceramic balls and let mill for a couple days. Next pack into a steel container and heat till it melts, adding some extra hydroxide helps. When its molten pour it out on a cookie sheet and disolve in basic distilled water ph over 12. The sodium silicste will disolve and the junk sinks. Store in a dark plastic bottle.❤

Sodium hydroxide reacts with atmospheric carbon dioxide during milling, so you have sodium carbonate and bicarbonate. If you melt the mixture, you obtain the low melting sodium glass (600-800 ° Celsius). This glass was discovered by Phoenixes. The ratio sodium/silicon (w/w) changes its solubility in water and in alkaline solutions. However the presence of calcium compounds in the mixture or in the solution makes high melting and water insoluble glass.

Just use silicagels without humidity indicators. They are colorless.

But you didn't use it to make a sand core. 🙁 How do we know if it really works? There are different sodium silicate formulations and some are said to not work as well as those sold for foundry use. Have you used your solution to make cores, and how did it turn out? (Rudy in Winnipeg)

Hey Rudy, this is a very good point of yours. I use this kind of "waterglass" in one of my videos to make "activator" for making geopolymer and although it has the very same composition (calculated via stochiometry) as my sodium silicate plus NaOH activator for the same metakaolin, it performs differently. Its only logic as waterglass is produced by melting together SiO2 plus an Na2O deliverer, as we would say in my are. Of course it is not the same as dissolve SiO2 in NaOH solution. Anyways, thanks for your video Ogmios Forge!

Can silica gel (used for absorbing moisture in packaging), be used in place of cat litter
@OgmiosForge

I believe that’s the exact same stuff. Can anyone else confirm?
@bencapobianco2045

Yes it just takes longer to dissolve so it’s best to grind it up first. Also make sure the dry packets you use are pure silica as some of them have other things in them. Hope this helps.

They are similar, not the same. Cat litter can absorb only third of the moisture compared to pure silica.

@@Kangsteri the "crystal" cat litter is silica gel, you just have to dry it in the oven and it'll absorb as much water.
