The PVC pipe is brilliant! Glad I saw vid before I made my own. Thank you!

It came to me while on the throne, probably! You could just insert the vertical rod directly into the concrete, but it would probably deteriorate within a couple seasons.

I made this today! Spent about $45 on material per pot. That included the pot, concrete, 2x2x8, the spray paint I used, the hook I put on the top, the PVC, and the string of lights. (Stupid dollar store lights that inspired this whole project and will probably have to be replaced by next year). I don't have much diy experience and this was a great project to tackle to build my confidence with that skill. Would absolutely recommend this project if you are thinking about it!

Maybe drill a few holes in the pipe to allow water to drain into the soil.

Yep! That's something I forgot to do, but did it a few weeks ago. It would be smart to drill a hole or two where the shaft site, so the water doesn't destroy your wood shaft.

Do you think the pole will hold up a shade sail?
@SeededGarden

You have to keep the wind shear in mind. If a stiff breeze comes up, these poles can fall over if they're trying to support a sheet of fabric.

Does the 2 inch post fit into the 2 inch pvc?
@DeeGeeDeFi

The point of this step is to make sure you get PVC pipe of the proper diameter that your 'post' or rod will fit into. A snug fit is best, so it will remain as upright as possible. Mathematically speaking, a 2" wide post will NOT fit into a 2" inner diameter pipe.

Did you create a how-to by chance?

I have not... it's not terribly difficult, though. 1. Drill a hole in bottom center of planter (to allow shaft PVC pipe to drain) 2. Mix up a full bag of Quikrete. 3. Hold PVC pipe to bottom of planter, and fill planter with cement. DO NOT FILL PVC. That's where the shaft will be inserted. 4. Allow concrete to cure overnight. 5. Drill some drainage holes through the planter sides (at close as you can to the top of the concrete) 6. Fill remaining planter with soil, insert your shaft into the PVC pipe!

What size is the pole?

7-8' tall. Make it tall enough to allow people to walk under, if that's the goal. The taller it is, though, the more stress (wind shear susceptibility) will be put on the weighted base. You can make it shorter, but then you'd have to position the bases out of walking area.
