Thanks for the review. I was all excited about purchasing it. Good price, fairly light for an 18". I went to Sweetwater and helped myself to their console and compared a whole bunch of subwoofers. I set them all to 0dB and flat. I was not impressed with the Mackies at all. The lows were muddy, the output wasn't that great. In the same price range was the Behringer B1800XP 3000W 18 inch - these were much better, but weighed almost 100lbs and were huge! Finally I was able to get a little used QSC KS112 for $630! Despite this only having a 12" sub the output was way better and way cleaner than anything they had there for under $1000. It even had wheels and was smaller! The JBLs were good- but out of my price range for the ones that were better than the QSCs I got. The Electro-Voice ELX200-18SP 18-inch was decent at about $1000, but it was a lot bigger than the QSC, not nearly as easy to move and I still liked the sound out of the 12" QSC band box design better.

@@KrisLynk They had both the 118S and the DRM18S I listened to - The DRM18S was better than the 118S but there were better options at that price point. I still liked the sound from the QSC KS112 better than the DRM18S, and it was smaller. The JBL IRX-115S sounded good also at around $800 as another cheaper option (all the JBLs sounded good- better as price went up). The Behringer DR18SUB 2400W 18 inch for about 540 really surprised me, I definitely liked that better than the Mackie, although they were big & heavy.

What kind of material is the sub made of? Is it wood (of some sort)? Any idea the size of the voice coil? They don't seem to be advertising these specs for some reason.

Might be a stupid question. But how will this setup be vs a JBL Partybox 1000 ? X 2 speakers. Im a new Dj planing to host small partys and out door events. And 2 x Mackie 118s 18" + 2 x Mackie 215 15" speakers will kill my budget. Thats why i looking at the JBL Partybox 1000 🙏

What kind of controller are you using? I have a RANE One and can just go directly from the back XLR to the Mackie 118s then XLR to my top speakers. I use an external mixer cause it gives me more options though.

I wish manufacturers would be held to an honest standard of rating the power of their speakers. There's no way in the world. These are 1400 W on the output. It wouldn't even be 1400 W peak based on what I've seen of the amplifier and power supply that 1400 W is the total power consumption of the system at its max. The speaker output couldn't be more than two hundred watts RMS at best. I feel it is false advertising to label these 1400 W speakers. And there's no way in the world that can even come close. The components on the power supply and amplifier could never support 1400 watts on the speaker output

MAX SPL is a better comparison to go by because you are comparing actual sound output. But then again- there's potential to lie about this number also. Best way is to go and compare them side by side. I live by Sweetwater here in Fort Wayne, so that's pretty easy for me. Something I've noticed though is that the more reputable brands SPLs seem fairly accurate when I compare them against each other (QSC, JBL, EV). I haven't really listened to Mackies yet- but I'm curious because it'd hard to believe that an 18" sub only weighs 65#. Even if it's not the cleanest bass, if it can output 132dB SPL, weigh 65# and get it for around $700 that's a big win. I do some outdoor shows for my daughters band- (just a bunch of teenagers).
