The scariest part about 0:41 isn't just how fast it is: it's how clean it is. The dude's essentially sliding up the fretboard to the next note each time, yet his picking's as clean as a whistle, each note perfectly clear. Unreal.

Exactly what I was thinking ! Django often played very fast chromatic runs, and I just don't understand how he was able to quickly slide on a string with one finger(that's the easy part!) and manage to pick each fret with total accuracy ! Just like you said !

Also, behind Django is his younger brother Joseph (also known as Nin Nin). Joseph would go to Django's gigs in place of him when he didn't feel like going, and played with Django in the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, and he went on to become a well respected gypsy jazz guitar player in his own right. If you listen to his recordings, you can so clearly tell the influence his older brother had on his playing. So cool! Edited because I mistakenly called him Babik at first instead of Joseph. Babik was the name of Django's son, who ironically also went on to become a jazz guitarist!

What's more astonishing is he only had two fingers to play with on the fret board due to a fire in his caravan. He got depressed and never played for a long time afterwards, before reinventing how to play with only his index and middle fingers as you can clearly see. Thats what made his style unique and what created this 'gypsy style' guitar sound and why it's basically down to this man. He could play with those two fingers what many can't play with four! Genius!

The thing that stands out for me with Django was that after his injury, he had enough determination and love for the guitar to come back as strong as previously. About 20 years ago I heard something with Django & Stephane. It was so cool and think about sitting in a Paris bar in the 30's ( I know this is from the 40s) listening to the Quintette du Hot Club de France. Wow.

I came to watch this because Rory Gallagher mentions Django on his interview Borderline, bu this is beyond incredible, two fingers!

This blew my mind when I first saw this at the age of 18. If it wasn't for my illness I probably could have knuckled down and learnt some of this stuff. I don't play heavy rock anymore because of the bad spirits attached to it, but I don't think theres anything wrong with a bit of Django swing :)

And he’s picking with the side of his thumbnail!? Playing with only two fingers, the guitar doesn’t even look very well set up, the strings look a bit high. But he’s got magic! And a style that was all new at that time.

This is a clip from a larger presentation to be used in British cinema to promote the tour that the Quintette was supposed to going to make in England. In fact there were two songs recorded. The other one has still to be found. The tour was curtailed bij the attack on France bij the Germans.. Django left London on the first ferry possible.

I am listening for more than 50 years and I keep listening. (And playing as a double bassist in a gypsy swing band) never a dull moment.
