fast charging degrades the battery faster and makes it very hot which is dangerous it's not a good thing and never will be, a practical thing yes but good no, look at China to see what happens when manufacturers forget this reality

28:00 I've worked in the outdoor/tech space with ruggedised smartwatches/ phones. It takes 4-6 years for normal tech to be rugged enough to work in an outdoor environment. High/low temperatures, drops & falls, dirt/dust resistance, waterproof IP ratings. For example regular Apple Watch vs Ultra. We can see this in the bike industry with commuter bikes vs EMTBs too, gates belts, MGU's and integrated lights are all commonplace in new commuter bikes. Where DJI really excel is by leveraging its outdoor tech R&D from outdoor cameras and drones. Great podcast guys keep it up ; )

As a US consumer if you are one of the first with a pinion, it'll get coverage and hype. It's a no brainer. It was frustrating trying to find anything with a gearbox and "settled" with an ibis oso. I would have found a way to pay crestline prices for a gearbox.

The problem I see with these higher power motors is that most countries have a definite power limit. I have a BBSHD motor with the HV Kit putting out 3300 watts because in my area, there are very steep hills. I tend to keep my power at 2 out of 9 so as to fly below the radar, but for hillclimbing , bump it up to 4 or 5. Politicians are going to push for license and insurance in the future with our electric bikes simply because they can make money from us. Too many electric bike riders are abusing the system, and we will pay the price in the near future, unfortunately.

I hope that these motor companies soon start making different cost level bundles for the accessories like having a premium package with touchscreen stuff but also options for a super basic setup with a really minimal led mode selection thing so people that dont care for that stuff can pay a bit less.

Little hint: rotor length is increasing torque linear, radius is increasing torque quadratic. Keep that in mind then considering ZF and TQs system, which are from my perspective the best motor with the harmonic drive as gear. And I was doing motor control software for electric power steering motors, 1.5kW at 12V. :)

Great show mate. But when will big bike brands come together. where they will give us the option to choose which motor we want to run on our bikes. Like the bike transmission on our amish bikes. Give us the option to run another make motor with simple plug and play and maybe a simple dealer help tune or software swap via app.

Imagine if we could get selectable power maps. It would be great to be able to select for lower cadence high torque for a steep climb, then flip to a high cadence / top end power for a long fire road climb.

I do not see so many customers really need high travel ebike like 180/180. Who has trails around that need this? Only in some place in US/Canada. 150 or 160 is enough for hard Enduro with good kinematics. But if the weight is not much affected, then why not have some more, yes.

Motors are cool and that DJI motor looks insane. Given DJI's expertise in consumer electronics, I don't doubt that the motor will be on point, but until it's strapped onto a Crestline or similarly engineered bike that I trust, I'll wait... When I'm staring at a huge lip going mach chicken, or puckered down a steep chunky chute, can't tell you how thankful I am to be on board the trusty @crestlinebikes eeb! ⚡💨🤘

5:30 Torque and power are two different things though. The Shimano is only 500 watts whereas the Bosch is 600 watts. Basically, they might have the same torque at low rpm but the torque tapers off sooner on the Shimano as you rise through the revs/cadence whereas the Bosch will maintain higher torque at higher rpm hence the higher power output.

Charge point location can have some unintended consequences. My Focus Sam has it where if the bike gets moved backwards an inch, the pedal rotates into the charge cable, and completely busts the flimsy charge point mounts. Would have been much better in top tube or under battery cover

Oh, I’m one of the guys that are really against electric cars and bikes because they’re gonna try and take away the internal combustion engine eventually but sure looks freaking cool man easy bikes today are amazing. The technologies that are coming out is just phenomenal. It’s getting to understand all of that electronic stuff too, though when something breaks on you, you don’t always have to send it back to get it fixed and get there and understand how everything works so I can fix it myself. but yeah, I think I would get one of these electric mountain bikes to try out. They look pretty damn cool and fun.

Without a significant new technology or materials, all motors operate on effectively the same brushless motor tech, so you can reshuffle the numbers, but you can't break physics. The same is true with lithium batteries. They're not breaking new ground with regards to energy density. Key to motor's numbers is more the area under the graph curve and not the peaks (which is basically what Bosch are saying)

Troydon is spot on. We don’t buy a bike because of a tough screen , find my bike tech. Nice to have but not on critical purchase path. I own a Crestline bike and love my Bosch race motor. I think if you are a bike brand in the US market betting your brand future success on a Chinese based tech solution could be problematic unfortunately.

Just so I understand, a bike brand that no one has ever heard of with a motor system that no one outside of KZitemland has ever heard of wants the best part of £10K for an ebike? 🤔 And, if you want the 19.2 KG lightweight version £10K is what you're gonna need to spend as the £6-7K bike only comes with the bigger, heavier battery. Hmm, that's what you call taking the piss out of your customers before you even have any!😡

DO NOT UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE ON THE GEN 4. One of the next few updates will brick your bike. Bosch is a d bag when it comes to end user support. The bike shops just try to sell you a new bike once new tech has been out for a little while. My 2020 niner was bricked after an update just days before the warranty expired. Took niner 2 years to decide to give me a new bike. Technically there was nothing wrong with the bike other than the motor was bricked from an update. Shame I can get a part for a 30 year old car or dirt bike and cant even get certain parts for a 2 year old bike for the reason it is unsafe.... We send these things down cliffs, what part of that is safe to begin with, but god forbid you go 2 mph over 20mph.
