I’ve always wanted to get a drone to get awesome cinematic footage, especially since coming to China. I take a trip to the DJI Shanghai flagship store in Xintiandi to get the retail experience, unbox the whole thing and eventually test it the same day at night (NOT recommended). After a lot of research I went for the DJI Mini 2 as its small and compact and I’m new to all of this. The Mini 2 exceeded all my expectations in low light. I’m looking forward to taking this lil’ guy on many ventures with me.
I flew it over the Zhongshan Park area, and got too excited with the footage that I lost transmission signal as there were too many tall buildings in the way. I eventually managed to land it back safely with the ‘auto return to home’ feature. But check out the footage at the end, I’m sure you’ll agree it was well worth it!
In China, most areas restrict the maximum altitude for flying to 120 meters but some areas permit 500 meters. You can’t fly over government buildings, military buildings, airports and other sensitive areas and the DJI Fly app will inform you of these areas. There are also no weight restrictions on the drones for flying in China. They did recommend that I don’t fly at night but I just had to do it…
