As a modder that develops for a community.. Miyazaki's thoughts echo back in my own being, trying to create my perfect idealized version of this space sim called Freelancer, knowing full well that no matter how good it is, how much activity it has or what is the reception of it, I can not ever fully enjoy it myself, because I'd know almost everything there is to know about it. That's some heavy stuff man, he created a game that millions already say is one of the best there ever was, yet Miyazaki stays humble and shares his silent regret that he personally couldn't share that exact same sentiment, sense of wonder and accomplishment as did so many others. Which might explain why he gives so much freedom to other directors.. he has a general idea, has a curated and experienced team that knows the formula to their own success (essentially extra copies of himself in a way) to create the next best thing that he also gets to enjoy. This man is a god damned icon and someone to look up to, each game he was involved in was trying to be the best in its era from the resources available, but nonetheless what it was perceived as, it still inevitably had a role to fulfill in the idea that it was just another stepping stone towards "perfection". Elden Ring is obviously my favourite of the entire From Software catalogue, but funnily enough Dark Souls II is in the second place (deep down its still my favourite, but I know it can't hold a candle to ER, not to mention the online aspects and the player count) I felt extremely burned out after years of modding, but his sense of duty and indomitable march toward the idealistic game reinvigorated me, can't wait to shake off my responsibilities and finally get back to modding!

I want to say this now. We are officially entering the post Elden ring age of from soft and no one knows what that’s going to look like. Especially with Miyazaki being the president but allowing hand selected talent that he worked with on projects begin their own director journeys and games free of his oversight. This has several branching possibilities and also I don’t think it’s just one new director. It may be up to 3 of them and most likely hand selected by Miyazaki and groomed for the position. It’s exciting because we will still get games from Miyazaki but now we may also get some other innovative projects to indulge! I’m hopeful because Miyazaki and his team has not failed us.

I like Miyazaki's humor, I chuckled a good bit during this video. That idea of value though, I think that's been lacking with the recent stint of Big Games. There are good people making quality work all over the games industry, but the one's hogging all the spotlight and being pushed are the live services where the only value is what goes into the c-suites bank account. Some of them sure aren't valuing their employees. But a big $40 expansion on an already huge game that could easily add 150+ hours of gameplay that isn't grinding the same missions in Suicide Squad? That's good value.

If you actually read the Eurogamer review, the difficulty of the DLC is a minor point. The criticism the review spends the most time on is the DLC's more explicit story delivery and its increased guidance via developer messages. To quote: "At one point, I enter a dungeon with an "official" message at the entrance, explicitly directing me to "hit them where they're weakest," referring to the dungeon's golem-like constructs. This is not a directive anyone wants to see in a FromSoft game; it is difficult to imagine someone making it this far in a Souls game and not understanding the point of a conspicuously red gaping hole in a large monster." The review goes on to provide further examples of explicit signposting from the developers that the reviewer felt were unnecessary and took away from the game's sense of mystery and discovery.

I truly wish we had more Miyazakis and Swen Vinckes in the gaming industry. They know what they want to make, they both have aspirations to make just peak RPGs with every new game they make, and both had great successes with their last project that blew their modest expectations out of the water and annihilated AAA juggernauts in game awards during their respective years of release. The industry needs more leaders like them in charge of things. I feel we'd get out of this gaming slop rut that we're in. But first that requires getting rid of the shareholders and suits who know nothing of gaming trying to exploit is for our spare change at any chance they get. Another Miyazaki and Vincke similarity is that they both just trust their teams absolutely. The amount of faith they put in their dev teams has to be a great morale booster and the better the morale, the more passion is put into the game, which makes it better in the end.

For Miyazaki to achieve his dream game he has to either:- A)Add a ton of randomness to the game, as in build a Rogue-like game with the souls formula, or ... B)Guide someone else -someone he really trusts- to create that game by giving them his ideas for the perfect fantasy game and then letting them rip without getting into the nitty-gritty of the actual development, so when it's time for the game to be played he is surprised by it just like us (which is what I think he is doing now).

Elden Ring was my first Fromsoft game, my cousin got me into it and I ended up putting more hours into it than he did lol (several hundred hours). I also went back to try Demon Souls, Dark Souls and Sekiro, kinda amazed I didn’t get into the series sooner. My first run of Elden Ring was magical, truly enjoyed it more than any other game recently. Even my (many) deaths against Maliketh and Melania (and that stupid Death Bird in the snow, omg I hated that thing lol). That being said, this is probably the most I’ve ever actually been excited for DLC for pretty much any game.

I would take Fextralifes claim with a grain of salt. They also said that Baldurs Gate 3 had 17,000 endings. 120 hours is a wildly different number than all the other reviews I’ve seen

Something funny, especially considering what Rataoskr's been doing, is that I can't wait to NOT play Elden Ring. I took a break, but about a month ago, I've been playing Elden Ring and nothing else basically. I have so many games I want to play, but I've been waiting until after the DLC goes through its life cycle. Mostly so I don't get my muscle memory mixed up.

To be fair, the question about the size was about the size of the *map*, which, depending on how you interpret it, might actually by about it, it's just extremely vertical and dense

last part is super interesting. He seems to be implying adding elements of randomness or procedural generation to his games, some way to make it unique and diverse so that even the creators can never know exactly what is coming next. Of course Proc Gen is usually the antithesis of the carefully crafted level design of From games, but if anybody can make it work really well it would be miyazaki. Maybe adding roguelike elements. Proc gen terrain is one thing, but what about procedurally generated enemies or attack movesets? You can already kind of see this with the complex and dynamic attack chains of bosses in ER, for example Margit.

Holy shit man, Miyazaki is fucking amazing, that man is HIM. I get overjoyed by seeing virtue and commitment, and what he said in this game exemplifies those things. I honestly got emotional, he is admirable.

i always wanted a more zelda-esque approach to Miyazaki's games. back then in the great hollowing i imagined skills or perks that would give this open world a more metroidvania sort of backtracking, not necessarily a grappling hook but rather more original things. i always recall to the castlevanias from ps2, where your summons also worked as skills from pokemon to traverse in different forms or just having a golem to break a wall and discover a dungeon, i believe extrapolating the freedom to a more creative sense while keeping it action rpg extremely focused on combat as usual could potentially be my dream game. also maybe a little more gothic approach to the fark fantasy theme, but if the spellbound leaked image is real i think we will be getting actually further from that in the future.

I've heard things, I've seen what I'm assuming is fake photos of a certain boss fight, but i'll disregard them until i do any and everything I can in the DLC. And if it's tough, I'll just level up, evolve, and 'get good'

"People universally agree that Miyazaki is a filthy liar. The playable area is much, much larger than he said it would be." The bastard! "Many people said this is the best DLC. Not the best FromSoftware DLC, just the best DLC." 🤣 For serious, though, here are a few things I'm really, really hoping for: -At least five or so of each new weapon class. Considering the implied size of the DLC I'm not terribly worried, but I really want varied options to choose from. -Some way to farm Dragon Smithing Stones, or at least a large number to be found in the Land of Shadow. I've been saving the base game ones for the characters I intend on bringing into the DLC, but I really don't see what the harm is in making them farmable. -More Asian or otherwise non-European style armor, in the medium to heavy class. Say, a heavy samurai armor to go with the great katana? It's just difficult to go tanky without turning the character into some kind of knight, and while I _like_ playing knights I'd appreciate other stylistic options. -A Faith-scaling katana that deals holy damage. Like, not a great katana, just a regular one. I'm not even that into using the katana class but I always felt we were missing a holy version. -Blessed Dew Talisman +1. Just a little more HP regen, please. It's really only useful outside of combat anyway so all it would do is cut down on the time standing around. -A talisman or shield that regenerates FP. All the other health regenerating items have an FP equivalent and I see no reason not to include at least one passive option. -Medium shields with 100% physical defense that aren't heater shields. Preferably some round ones. Give me a viking shield or something, please. There are a couple more, like more features added to the armor customization (changing cape colors, maybe switching the cape of one armor on for another) or some mechanic that makes blocking while two-handing weapons more viable, but those are very particular to me and would likely be more invasive to implement as well, so I'm not holding out hope. Really, I'm just happy for more stuff.
