Appreciate the thoughts, have been watching all the reviews of this scope trying to get someone’s take on the eye box and you’re the only one I found who covered it! Refreshing to not have another “review” that is essentially reading the specs off the box or just going over features, that’s great and all but people really need perspective on how that all plays out in reality so keep up the good work!

Unfortunately, so far, there is no such thing as an inexpensive FFP LPVO that is also good. I have looked at a ton of them and the way my recommendations are working out so far, in the order of ascending price is pretty straightforward: SAI 1-6x24, PA GLxC 1-8x24, Vortex Razor Gen3 1-10x24, March 1-10x24 DFP. Below or around $1k, it is either SFP LPVOs (Delta Stryker, Tract Toric) or go further down in price and get a decent prismatic with an offset dot.

I have a question, I have the exact same scope as you, Plx C 1-8 M8 meters. I see you are using yards vs meters for your bdc on strelok, my question is this, does setting up the bdc for yards vs meters on the meters version negate the usefulness of the ranging in the reticle? Since it's ranging for meters not yards? Or is it close enough it doesn't matter? Thanks
@DarkLordOfOptics
Жыл бұрын
It is generally close enough at the distances where you can range with simple ranging features in the reticle, i.e. inside of 500 yards or so. The utility of ranging with the choke style rangefinders in fairly low magnification scopes is greatly overstated. It looks great on paper and makes for awesome marketing, but it is a shit show most of the time. It is mostly applicable for area fire within the military use envelope. Aside form that, for longer distances, it is really only there to get you close enough to hopefully see impact and walk your shots in.

@Dark Lord Of Optics: Great review. How would you compare it to the March LPVOs? The dual reticle of the 1-10 shorty seems to pack a lot of feature.
@DarkLordOfOptics
Жыл бұрын
The 1-10x Shorty is a more capable design and the ultimate optical quality is a bit better. However, there is a price to pay for that (literally). It really comes down to how you use it. If you do not need to shoot at very close distances on high magnification or at very extended distances on high magnification, March's side focus may not mean that much to you. For normal use on AR-15s, PLxC is probably the best bang for the buck going. More expensive stuff is better, but not that much better especially for the normal 50 to 700 yard use. The biggest weakness of the March is the mount. There are ways to work around it, but the mount they make for it is comparatively heavy which negates a lot of the weight advantage the Shorty has. With PLxC, it is much easier to get it mounted in a variety of ways and to keep the whole thing very light.

@CaptainCreampie69

With an etched reticle you don’t need a ridiculous brightness. If you are shooting at something that is bright/white then the contrast of the black will appear on the target. If shooting at something dark/dusk the illumination works. The only time you need to be able to get a tan from your reticle is when it is purely a red dot like a T2, MRO HD, EOTech EXPS or along those lines. I don’t own any primary arms optics but have several high end LPVO to include an ATACR 1-8, S&B dual dot 1-8, Leupold MK8 1-8 and a Swarovski z8i 1-8. I have looked through this same optic and was blown away. I legit think this and the PLX line is the best value in optics. The only reason I don’t own one is because I am a brand snob. While the glass isn’t as clear as a Swarovski and not as bright as the ATACR those are double or more in price with not double the performance.

@@DarkLordOfOptics Thanks dlo, optically, do you believe the PLxC has a big edge. As far as glass clarity (edge to edge) and brightness ? I'm assuming the Stryker would be faster on 1x or have you found the PA ACSS without nuclear bright illumination to be sufficient on 1x? Appreciate any thoughts
@DarkLordOfOptics
Жыл бұрын
@@josiahb55 PLxC is very fast on 1x. I do not know if it s slower than the Stryker on 1x, but it might be by a smidge if you strongly prefer the bright dot. After a little training, it is a wash. Stryker has that bright dot, but PLxC has a better corrected FOV which also helps and the horseshoe is very visible. Still, FFP LPVOs make sense if you need to do the up close stuff AND extend the range where trajectory compensation and wind really matter. If you do not need the longer distance stuff, might as well stay with the Stryker or something similar.

How would you compare the PLx gen2 1-8x to the razor 1-10x? Is the razor worth the 1k price difference?
@DarkLordOfOptics
Жыл бұрын
Good question. I have both and do not plan to get rid of either one. Whether it is worth the price difference is really a personal choice. Razor is a better scope. The biggest difference aside from the obvious (magnification range) is the reticle illumination. Razor Gen3 uses ultra bright diffractive reticle illumination. It is VERY fast. PLxC is about as fast on 1x as LPVOs without nuclear bright dots get. The advantage PLxC has is that if your battery dies, it will work better on 1x. Once you up the magnification, they perform somewhat similarly, except Razor can got a bit higher up. Both are really excellent scope and, in terms of bang for the buck, I probably have to give it to the PLxC. It is sitting right at the sweespot of high quality performance at the moment. If they ever get that diffractive reticle in there, it will be an even more serious shot across the bow for all of the big names.
@fook-joby-den6172
Жыл бұрын
I can appreciate that. To clarify, your stating that in your opinion at a certain quantity level you will eventually face the law of demising returns & then have to decide if it’s worth it for you to massively increase cost for minimal performance/quality gains?
@DarkLordOfOptics
Жыл бұрын
@@fook-joby-den6172 The law of diminishing returns is always in place. The tough part is figuring out at which price it really kicks in. For FFP scopes right now, it is probably in the $1500-$2000 range, so the Razor Gen3 is probably just above that. In the specific case of the 1-10x24 Gen3, the optomechanical advantage is there, but not that high. However, the nuclear bright reticle is a real advantage. I would not call that minimal. To give another example, the highest quality FFP LPVOs I have ever tested are S&B Dual CC 1-8x24 and Blaser 1-7x28. They are quite remarkable, but they are definitely on the far side of the diminishing returns portion of the price curve.
