I was looking for a comparison between the light effects and the diamante and this video showed me exactly what I needed! Thank you very much!

Glad I could help! I'm still a big fan of the Kreinik threads too, they're great (and way easier to use than the DMC Light Effects floss, which is so tricky to use). 😊

Thanks for the video Dana! 😍✨ anything metallic but I do find some of it challenging to use. I will have to try this one.

I was really hoping you would show how to actually take the floss off/start the process of undoing it to begin using the floss. This is a huge oversight.
@peacockandfig

I'm sorry? It's not a huge oversight, it's a common way to store floss on spools. There's a cut in the plastic spool top and the end of the thread is lodged in that cut, the end is often hiding under the top label. So find the cut in the spool edge and peel back the label a bit to grab the floss end. When you're done cutting, put the end back into that cut slot otherwise your thread is going to unspool and get tangled. That's how a lot of high end floss on spools is packaged, sorry if you've never seen that before. 😊

I started to use the #8 Kreinik braid in burgundy and removed it. I’ve never seen something so thick. Ordered #4 in same color. Hopefully it looks better. Definitely thicker then 2 strands of cotton floss.

Yeah Kreinik #8 braid = 8 strands of the blending filament, and #4 = 4 strands. #4 is about equivalent to two strands of DMC embroidery cotton. 🙂

Hopefully #4 will be better. Just finished a Lavender and Lace Angel that had some metallic floss. A frustrating thing to work with sometimes. 😀

Metallics tip: Short thread (9-12”), short tail, and slip knot your thread onto the needle.
@peacockandfig
4 жыл бұрын
This one, slip knotting your thread onto the needle won't work -- the threads are too thick for that as they're a single twisted strand, it'd be too hard getting the needle through the fabric that way. You can just stitch as normal with these ones, but do use shorter strands. 🙂

When I first used metallic threads I found it a little tricky because of how much they can come undone. However, I learned that it's better to stitch with the floss strands being shorter and then stitch very carefully. I don't use them often since I very rarely come across patterns that call for them. I tend to use them as my own personal twist to an already existing pattern to make it more personal.

Yep, whatever works for you! They have come a long way though, so definitely try out some other ones if you like. Lots of designers do use metallics, like I do, and my friend Shannon Christine definitely does. 🙂

I’m working on a 25 count fabric full coverage piece and I’m looking for a Kreinik substitute, would you recommend the normal diamant or the grande? I personally love fuller coverage, but only as long as it’s still comfortable to stitch with!
@peacockandfig

You'd have to play Anthea, have a look at the coverage of the DMC vs the Diamant and Grande and see which one might be best. 2 strands of DMC is equivalent roughly to #4 Kreinik braid, so that should be able to help you out. 😊

Couldn't you just use two strands of the regular for an equivalent to the Grande? I've gotten 8 spools of the regular and would like to use them without purchasing something else.
@peacockandfig

You can, but the look is very different, and using two strands you may have to use shorter lengths than if you were using the Grande (as they may start to unwind a bit as the threads are bumping up against each other and causing friction). But definitely use what you have already. 🙂

Do you ever separate the Diamant into individual strands for detail work? I don't cross stitch, I embroider, so I tend to use variable strands when I stitch. Light Effects was an absolute nightmare, and I was only ever able to work with it by blending it with regular non-metallic thread.
@peacockandfig

No you don't Molly, it would just make the threads fray and be really difficult to work with. Diamant is a twisted thread like pearl cotton, meaning you don't separate out strands. 🙂

Sorry? You literally grab the end and wind it off, like any other thread... no need to get snarky, this tutorial is years old and free so yeah...
