Ive always loved the smoothness of that sax at the beginning. Saxophone in an orchestra is so underrated. Shostakovich is a master at integrating saxophone to his orchestra and it's what gives a special vibe to the piece.

One of the most beautiful and haunting, melodies, ever composed in the classical world. In this waltz, I hear pain and a bit of tragedy, because it was written in a time when there was no gaiety, there was no easy, living, and fear was all around. But the leaders required people to show happy faces, have happy hearts, while they did not at all feel happy with they way things were. This was written in that era, the Soviet era, in Russia. Shostakovich did not agree with much of what was going on but to keep his life and work intact, he shut up and composed as he was asked. The one time that he didn’t quite do as he was asked, he was shunned by Stalin and his followers for many years. I believe this waltz brought Stalin back to the fold of Shostakovich‘s music. As I said, I hear a lot of pain and a lot of irony, and a false reality, a false gaiety. This man, this composer, was a genius. But then, we all know that. Bravo Maestro. 🙇♀️

This is art. All the people gathered together to witness and celebrate this spectacle. A feat of mankind to create these instruments and do certain things to them that makes them sound pretty. And then for a genius artistic mind to come along and put ink on paper that translates into commands on what to do to that piece of wood or brass. Almost poetic.

whenever I listen to this waltz, I can't help but think about it in relation with the famous Wien waltzes. just think about it: the most famous waltz in the world, the blue danube, was written in 1866. Franz Joseph was emperor, Austria Hungary was one of the major powers in Europe, and Germany still didn't exist. Austria hungary deluded itself for almost sixty years that it was still great. that it was still powerful. that it wasn't the second sick man of europe. the blue danube waltz reflects that- it's scintillating, glamorous, dreamy, and makes you drunk with sweeping waves of perfectly harmonious sound. then ww1 came, and the dream was shattered. fast forward to 1938, one world war and one revolution later, and we're on the brink of a second world war.... and shostakovich produces this. it's ironic, with the nasal voice of a saxophone playing the main theme instead of a glorious ensemble of arches. it looks at you pityingly, and says "bad hangover?"
