Agreed! Especially the extra outgoings to pay for a studio space, but alas I don’t rent my house we own it so it’s not as easy to up & move, but perhaps one day that could be an option ☺️

I love having a home studio! I’ve been a stay at home Mom and looking back I’m happy I was and grabbed moments for creating. My hubby was and is supportive and had the mindset of low overhead as well. Over the years I’ve appreciated being home with my kids and pups, doing things about the house and creating just fell into place. Wouldn’t have changed a thing! ❤

Exactly this ☺️ I wouldn’t have been able to be anywhere near as flexible if I’d had an external studio space during these early years with my son, which is why I’ll be reassessing my situation when he starts school in a few years 🥰 so lovely to hear that you’ve been able to spend more time with your family by being at home too! 💕

I've very grateful that we have a second bedroom in our apartment that can be my studio space. It's also much bigger than I was expecting, with is an added bonus. I love having my studio space at home. It's never really been a goal of mine to have an external studio. But if I really neded the space then I suppose that might change over time. Idk. I don't think having an external studio make you a "successful" artist. And I'm sorry if anyone ever made you feel like you needed one to be such. 💕

Ahh this is wonderful! 😍 I’ve seen a lot of people talk about feeling the need to have a studio space over the years & it’s always made me think deeply on it. At one point I thought it was what I wanted but then I was always afraid of the commitment etc especially during such uncertain times. As you say only time will tell if it’s something I will actually need vs what I want ☺️💖

The goose! 😍 agree with others that your art would be beautiful on totes & coasters! The studio space thing - looooove thinking about things like this. I can totally see how it's a marker of success for some. For me, it's not on my radar & is the other way around - having all the home comforts and not wasting time travelling to/from a studio are massive pros. Like you said about using your own loo, having the doggies around & being able to take a nap mid-work - they feel like luxuries to me. I like being able to work as and when I can, around MH fluctuations, so I think committing to a £500+ pcm space would feel like a massive pressure for me, which would make working even harder. But I know a lot of people really thrive off having that space to go to, keeping work/home separate & having that extra incentive to bring more in. I wonder which side of it you land on? 🤓xx

Thank you lovely! This is such a wonderful way of looking at it, if you’re working your dream job you’ve already made it ☺️ I love being so flexible throughout the day & as you say, bad mental health days happen & not having to call in sick & be able to create the working environment that supports my brain as much as possible has been a huge bonus. Duvet days in front of feel good films for example whilst also working on my laptop or getting some illustrations or planning done, the best kind of days! 🥰💕 the payments for a rented space would also create pressure & anxiety for me so I totally feel you there. And they can be so expensive can’t they! 🥴 For me I guess I’ve decided that only time will tell how things pan out ☺️✨

I love my home studio space ~ but we were blessed to find a place that was big enough for our family of five, and had enough room for a studio and a laser cutter in the garage… I wouldn’t really like to not have a studio at home; but honestly, if we grew enough I wouldn’t mind having a second studio space close by and a smaller home studio… or something out in the backyard. I think with a family, the closer it is to home, the better. That being said though, we homeschool and I know that makes a huge difference in how I’d like things set up. Each artist is different. For me, I’m successful if I can raise my children and do art that adds a little to our income on the side- as that is not an easy task I’ll take my wins there rather than the size of my space or how many staff I have to hire. 🌸🌿

Hi! Have you considered switching your bedroom with your office? As long as your office is big enough for your bed and the bedroom is bigger than your office lol Obviously your hubby needs to be on board, but it could be worth it, especially since you both are mostly in your workspaces and the bedroom is usually just spent sleeping in.

@@EllisWoolleyIllustration Oh no!! That's terrible lol Something I was thinking about for myself was a small camper, since it can be hooked up to plumbing and electricity. Then you'd have a tiny kitchen for your kettle! I'd remove the bed/ dining table, etc for office space. You might even have room for a play area for the little one. A used one wouldn't be too expensive, just maybe some time & money to fix it up if it's old.

At the moment I much prefer to work from home for as long as it meets my needs and I'm lucky enough to have a room in the house where I can create. I don't think having an external studio is a measure of success, just a practical solution for when working from home is not the best option. But I guess it depends what products someone wants to make as some do take up more manufacturing/storage space.

@@EllisWoolleyIllustration I'm hoping I never outgrow my little room ☺. My art business is still 'in development' as I though my style and skill level were not right the first time I tried to launch it a couple of years ago so I've just been practicing a lot since then and hope to relaunch this year. But me and my partner also run a graphic design business from home - the only things we need for that are a couple of computers so it takes up very little space.

Why don't you add your mug press and a heat press to your husband's studio if he has extra space? That way you could set specific times to go in and use them when he's spending time with little bear and you wouldn't have to worry about it taking up more space in your tiny studio. I think you should also really consider utilizing more up high wall space. Anchor things on the wall up high where it makes sense and be very efficient with that extra space that you're not utilizing.
@EllisWoolleyIllustration

He doesn't have space for those unfortunately. I've actually been going up the walls more & more since this video. I have lots of shelves up for art supplies & packaging materials but the printers & Cricut etc have to be on sturdy work surfaces as they're heavy, which take up the most room.
